Slow startup - Which of these programs can I remove?
Slow startup - Which of these programs can I remove?
My computer takes about 2 minutes to start up, which seems like a very long time to me. I want to remove a lot of the junk that starts up with the computer, but I'm new to IBM and don't know what's necessary and what is filler. So, these are all the things starting up (25!) on the computer. The ones in blue that I checked fall into one of two categories: a) I have no idea what it is, or b) I know what it is, but I don't know if it's needed or if it can be disabled. Either way, I'd like to know what I can get rid of.
And, if there are other tips to speed up the boot time, I'd like to hear them.

6) Ezejmnap - EasyEject Utility - can be removed
7) Ibmprc - not sure
8) Pwrmgrtr - Power Management - probably can remove, but not sure

I think GomJabbar's list is pretty complete. I would certainly uninstall Update Connector because Software Installer does a better job.
Otherwise, the other approach is to look at the programs: don't have any automatic updates running (SUN Java, Real Audio, QuickTime, Adobe, and on and on and on and on); uncheck the system tray option if you don't need to see the system tray item; check other options for doing things you don't need.
I do as I suggest here, and it takes a while to start (Access Connections, Symantec Client Security, DHCP et al are pigs on startup), but once running, I run at 2 percent or less CPU (including kernel) usage more than 99 percent of the time.

JMMMMM's thread is just what the doctor ordered for me as I have just acquired my first notebook...a T41...
ComJabbar's list was very helpful also...however...
I have 5 items I cannot positively identify, and would like opinions as to weather or not they are removable;
S3Tray2 (?).........................................Removable?
BMMLREF (?)........................................?
atiptaxx (Video?)..................................?
sgtray (Sound?)....................................?
AGRSMMSG (Agrere msngr?).................?
Thanks,

s3tray2.exe is used to gain quick access to a S3 graphics device. I don't see any reason not to remove it, unless you have a S3 video adapter. I would suggest renaming it first, and if no problems show up after using your computer for a while, then delete it.
sgtray.exe is Sonic Update Manager. I believe this is to check for updates on any Sonic software you may have on your laptop, such as RecordNow! and BackUp MyPC. Should be able to remove.
That said, why not just use hibernate or suspend? Much faster than booting up cold, and you don't have to worry about removing every process.

With my R51 and XP Pro, it seems that the WPA handshaking to my wireless router makes the recovery from hibernate take just as long as a cold boot.GomJabbar wrote:That said, why not just use hibernate or suspend? At least, that's what it looks like it's doing.

I agree, Kaspersky is also good, I like it because I can disable realtime, if I want max speed, and still have an awsome on-demand scanner.supergoat wrote:My suggestion is to, at the very least, remove anything from Symantic, including Norton Antivirus. Replace it with AVG or Panda.
Symantic products LOVE to eat resources.

Does anyone know what these are:
UCLauncher.exe
LPMGR.exe
cssauth.exe
qctray.exe
Ive just disabled in startup these:
Ezejmnap.exe - Because i can just use the windows ejector program.
Isuspm.exe - Because im not bothered about the installer software updating itself.
issch.exe - as above.
qctray.exe - i asume from the icon that its the ibm connect thingy, which i never use.
Are there any potential problems there?
Thanks in advance.

For people running Acronis TrueImage, I found this tweak to allow you to disable it's startup processes without messing up the functioning of TrueImage.
TrueImage has two (or three, depending, I think, on your version) startup processes.
trueimagemonitor.exe
schedhlp.exe
schedul2.exe
These need to run for TrueImage to function properly, even when you manually make images. But there's no reason they have to run at startup (unless you're using the automatic scheduling features of TrueImage).
The following tweak creates a script that runs the processes when you start TrueImage, rather than having them run all the time. It's from:
http://www.wilderssecurity.com/archive/ ... 42407.html
I added lines 3.5 and 4.5, after making a mistake that didn't allow the script to run properly.
1) Make a folder called 'Acronis Startup Tweak' (or any other name) in the Acronis Program folder or any other convenient out-of-the-way location
2) right-click TrueImage.exe (in the Acronis Program Folder), click 'create shortcut', and put the shortcut in your Acronis Startup Tweak folder
3) right-click schedhlp.exe (in \Program Files\Common Files\Acronis\Schedule2), click 'create shortcut', and put the shortcut in your Acronis Startup Tweak folder
3.5) shortcuts have to have same name as executables (get rid of "shortcut to" part)
4) copy/paste the text below into notepad:
NET START "Acronis Scheduler2 Service"
START schedhlp.exe.lnk
START TrueImage.exe.lnk
4.5) i added: START TrueImageMonitor.exe.lnk
i put that between START schedhlp.exe.lnk and START TrueImage.exe.lnk. i think you basically want to look at what processes your version of acronis is running at startup and then make sure those are included in the script you create here.
5) save the notepad file as startacronis.bat (or any other name, as long as the extension is '.bat'. Put it into your Acronis Startup Tweak folder
6) Right-click the .bat file, click 'create shortcut', and put the shortcut in your start menu, desktop, quicklaunch bar or wherever you want it.
7) optional: right-click this shortcut and change the icon, e.g. use the icon in TrueImage.exe
When you doubleclick the .bat file (or shortcut to the .bat file), you'll see a dos-style box. The batch file will start the acronis scheduler service (takes a few seconds), the schedule helper program (very fast), and then Acronis True Image itself.
Now you can disable the processes as startup items.
