T40 Cisco PCI Wireless LAN Adapter Cycle On & Off
T40 Cisco PCI Wireless LAN Adapter Cycle On & Off
I'm using a nicely configured T40 that has been lent to me by IBM in Guadalajara, Mexico while my A30P waits for parts (10 weeks so far, but that's another story). I have one problem with the T40; The 801.11B Cisco card keeps shutting down every couple of minutes. It's just a blink, but it's annoying and every once in a while it breaks a download. I've tried letting Windows manage the card as well as the Access Connections applet. The card's power management is set to "CAM" and I'm using the machine on mains, so it's not a battery management issue. I'm at the latest version of all the ThinkPad software and drivers. As an experiment I set my machine up next to my wife's A31. Her wireless is steady as a rock while mine does the on-off routine. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated (including how to get my A30p back).

Believe it or not, I have a T40 w. Cisco wireless card doing exactly the same thing. I haven't yet determined whether it's software or hardware related but it's a real PITA.mixz1 wrote:I'm using a nicely configured T40 that has been lent to me by IBM in Guadalajara, Mexico while my A30P waits for parts (10 weeks so far, but that's another story). I'm hoping somebody can help with this because I just got back from vacation and expect to be digging out for a couple of weeks.

Fixed!!!
I was thinking about this last night and realized that Windows is probably trying to grab the card. Even if you don't check the box that tells Windows to manage wireless connections, the service runs on startup.
It's a conflict between Windows Wireless Zero Configuration and the IBM Access Connections applet. I don't know why IBM doesn't patch the applet to turn off the Zero Configuration Service. They could even code the IBM applet so that it terminates the zero configuration service if the IBM applet is running, and restarts the service as the IBM applet exits.
Anyhow, set the service to disabled. You'll see that the option to have Windows manage the wireless connection is no longer available in the network properties panel. Having done that I have been up and running for two hours with no interruption.
