600X squeal from LCD

#1 Post by scoot1212 » Thu Aug 11, 2005 9:00 am

I just revived a 600X and the laptop is awesome except for a squeal that sounds like it's coming from the LCD. I have a few other 600's and 600e's kicking around that I can pull parts from. Does anybody know if a squeal is typically the LCD or the inverter or something else? I decided to use the 600X after 3 failed attempts to find a thin, light and quiet laptop.
Thanks
Scott

It's from the inverter, which is supposed to use ultrasonic frequencies to pump up the voltage to run the fluorescent backlight.

If you're lucky, it will go away if you increase the brightness to full. You may have to change the setting for brightness on battery in the ThinkPad Configuration software.

I replaced my inverter last night and so far the squeal has gone away. All I need now is a 7200 60 gig and I'll be all set. I am still considering installing internal wireless.
thanks
