One more question -- has anyone considered trying to find another drive in that form factor and swapping it out?

Basically, IBM has adapted an existing optical drive by adding a bezel, etc. I'm sure it would be possible to find another of the same form factor and fit it with the IBM-specific stuff from the old drive.

T4~Series had use special IDE adapter,
normal standard 9.5mm Drive cant use for T40~43.

There are new model of super Multi for T40~43 Ultrabay Slim,
4X DVD+-R/ 2.4X DVD+-RW/2X RAM and 24X CDRW,
name is "DVD Multi Ultrabay Slim Plus" too,
but I dont know is it had support DVD+-R DL writer?
because I didnt have time to try it.

follow website is my post about "UJ-832S for IBM Ultrabay Slim":

And everyone knows how well those black external drives slide into the ultrabay slim.

Why is "get an external" always the suggestion here? I bought my T42p because it is thin, light and gets terrific battery life. If people wanted suggestions on external peripherals, that is what they would ask for. All of the DVD burner threads I recall seeing for the lsat few months have concerned internal devices.

Because if you own DVDs with two different regional codes there is currently no workaround other than having two drives?

Just for the record, I've replaced the internal UJ-822S with a HDD adapter with 2nd disk and got an external LITE-ON SOSW-852SX. This burner has the benefit that there are several tools to customize the firmware and reset the regional codes, but an external power adapter needs to be used.

Dvd region free program can do the job, if you want to play all regions with 1 drive. :D

Well there is a faster drive, though IBM don't advertise it yet.
I have bought a DVD-Ram drive called Mathita UJ-832S, for my T42.
The burning max speed is:
CD/CD-RW 24/16
DVD-R/RW 4/2.4
DVD+R/RW 4/2.4
DVD RAM 2
I have tested CD, CD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R and it's capable to burn at the max speed over.
The DVD-RW and DVD-RAM I havn't tested yet.

Aha. So that's why I couldn't make it work with my Thinkpad's UJ830S.

Hi All!

I'm from Hungary, and i'm very bad in english, therefore i'm sorry. i've got yet 8 days a T43 (2668-97G)(made: 2005-09-19) and this has a Matshita UJ-822S drive. Where i buy the notebook, there sad me the notebook has 4X DVD writer. So at home i tryed, but the drive can writing just maximum 2X (I tryed: TDK, Verbatim TYG02, Ridisc). My question is: This drive can just maximum writing 2X official? When is it true, i ship my notebook back, beacuse i buy a 4X writer not a 2X.
