electronic noises on closing and opening windows

#1 Post by livejazz » Thu Aug 11, 2005 3:41 pm

I have had my t40 now for 4 weeks, and got passed various annoyances..however, the one that is sticking with me is the elecontric noises that can from the graphics card.

do other people have these? does it bother you?

when i scroll down a window..it screeches..electronically. seems to happen after 50 mins or so of use.

i tried turning off hardware acceleration. no joy.

anyway..it has left a rather bad experience with the thinkpad. not sure i would buy another. this is the sad part.

Whatever you do is, of course, up to you. But the world does not revolve around a sample of one. After a miriad of ThinkPads, I have never witnessed that. Sounds, though, like a hardware problem worthy of repair. ... JD Hurst

What was all that JD?

People don't have the luxury of buying multiple comps to see if a company is good. Most people will purchase from a different company if one does not perform with satisfaction the first time. Doesn't mean IBM is bad, but you can't expect them to spend another 3 grand when their first experience wasn't great.

Anyways, it doesn't sound normal so I would get it checked.

I have seen hints that other people have the same problem.

So how can I do anything about this...?

Monakh just posted in the Anandtech forums that he know several people who have a serious noise problem. This is not something I would expect on an IBM notebook. Not when we are paying $2000-$3500 for the Bentley of notebooks.

you can do nothing about it. The noise comes from the GPU, it is a little bit above the touchpad. Just watch if you see some artefacts on the screen (like coloured lines or squares). If this is the case the GPU will break very shortly and the system board has to be replaced. But the noise you described is perfectly normal.

Are you sure it comes from GPU ?

Do you use USB mouse ?

I have the same issue when I am scrolling windows, but I use external USB mouse and the source of the interference is the USB port.
Let's go'n'restart :-)
