Swap Security Chip on R-32?

#1 Post by slagmi » Fri Aug 12, 2005 11:29 am

Okay, so I just repaired an out of warranty R-32. The user's hardcore Firefox , so he was willing to save a couple of bucks and get a planar without the security chip. But I note that the chip is an easily removable plug-in. The old planar works sort of; it will run 10-20 minutes before locking.

I've read up a little on the security chip at Lenovo. The mechanism itself is fairly well explained. I thought I should float this here. Obviously it's not as simple as swapping because that wouldn't be much security, would it. I don't care about the info, if any, on the chip. I know how to enter the system and planar sn with the HMD, but what about the UUID?

Is it possible to initalize the security chip and use it on another planar that did not come with one?

From what I've been able to find, there is no "bond" between the security chip (ESS) and the motherboard. That is, you can swap security chips and all your keys will move with them.

You can wipe the entire security chip anytime you like, and generate new hardware keys (losing all your encrypted data, of course).

Try it and see! I don't see how you could hurt anything by plugging it in and seeing what the software says. I would expect it would come up just fine, and could read any of your old encrypted files that were made with that key.

Well, yea, I have already. With a straight swap the unit makes some music, and I mean music, not just beeps, thru the speaker and won't post.
