T43p special question

#1 Post by coolice » Fri Aug 12, 2005 12:36 pm

Hi !

I would like to do a special thing, and I would like to ask your help.

I would like to create a hidden partition (maybe HPA if it is neccessary), where I would place a simple PCDOS, so when I push the Access IBM button during boot, it would boot into this DOS partition and not to the windows.

So, exactly how the Restore and Recovery operates, just I would like to replace the pre desktop area with a simply dos, as its suits my backup needs batter.

It is important, that I dont have recovery disks, so if the solution needs as first step a recovery disk, could somebody make a sector backup of the HPA partition of a t43p please and be so kind, I could donwload it ?

Any good technical idea, how could I manage this ?

Many many thanks in advance,

Moore

Anyone's full backup of the HPA partition (or Restore CDs) would also include their own WindowsXP installation files, complete with the Activation Key. I don't think you will get a copy from anyone here. Maybe call IBM to get a set?

That said, I too am curious as to how one would make a separate boot partition that can be selected with the Access IBM button. I'd like to make mine Linux, just for fun. Having a button that selects boot partition would be cool if we could do the same thing.

From what I can find out, there is more to it than just the special partition type for the HPA.. there is something at the very end of the disc in the unused area as well. I could be wrong.

I posted this the other day, but maybe it was missed. This link explains the compostion of the Predesktop area. The External Sources links near the bottom of the page go into even greater detail. There is one pdf from IBM, and another from Phoenix (BIOS): Enjoy

Could you drop me a help to drive trhough this bunch of material, please ?

It would be so so great. In case we could have a simplier step by step solution, I would create a PDF and share with every body.

That was a very helpful reference! I thought the very last sector had something to do with it, because when I adjusted the partition map and overwrote that very small "unused" area at the end of the disk, the HPA stopped working.

It actually sounds pretty complicated to get an alternate OS installed there. I'd like to try, but it sure as heck won't be DOS. Maybe FreeBSD or Linux or probably just Memtest86+ to start with -- something easy.

Yeaaahhh, I think if one OS successfull, the othe will be easy. Linux or an other windows looks just as good as dos, so itsnt matter. I planned does for simplicity only.

dont the restore cds use a generic ibm volume licence key?

i dont think theres a poor sap at whatever oem that manually enters in each cd key on each machines preload..
