SLOW - My new T42???

#1 Post by hommer » Mon Aug 15, 2005 3:41 am

Hi guys.

Just got a my new T42 with fingerprint reader. I love it from the intial use. By the way, the system comes with 256mb of memory. It is very slow during normal use. I am suspecting the cause is the deficit of memory because I hear the harddrive spinning hard out when I open multiple tasks. But I would expect a Pent M 1.6ghz with 256mb and 40 gb 5400rpm to perform much better than this. Any thoughts guys?

Cheers

It's the memory. XP will use 256 Megs of memory by itself and then will start using virtual memory which accounts for the use of the hard drive all the time and the slowness. Just get some more memory and it'll speed up considerably.

Good luck.

I recommend upgrading to at least 512MB of RAM. Windows XP is actually ok with 256MB so long as you turn off all the eye candy, themes, animations etc. However, if you have tons of programs and windows open, and antivirus and other stuff in the tray, your system will be short of memory.

Norton?

#4 Post by Sleepy » Mon Aug 15, 2005 11:12 am

Maybe you should try to uninstall Norton AV. I had the problem of slow system on my previous (non-IBM) laptop with 512MB of RAM. As soon as I uninstalled Norton, everything was running OK.

I uninstalled Nortorn AV then installed Norton Internet Security 2005. It dragged the computer's performance down considerably when it is run in the background. I have to have some kind of internet guard to protect me against malicious viruses. I have just bought a 512mb of ram from a local auction site. Hopefully the laptop will be much faster. Thanks guys

Get one stick of a GB of ram, so you don't ever have to worry again about memory!

It is free, lightweight and works well.

AVG free and Avast work pretty well-- in my opinion, almost anything is better than NAV; However, if you are looking for a paid solution, I use Nod32, and strongly recommend it:

As an added bonus, it also protects against trojans and other malware, and is very system resource friendly.

I second your observation about NIS 2005. I've downgraded to NIS 2003. It runs smooter with aproximately the same protection.

Also 512mbo f ram minimum is a must( I run 1GB)

Norton 2003 will not give you any protection against the newer trojan viruses. 2005 doesn't do that great of a job against them.(Personal edition, I have no idea about Corporate edition)
If you don't mind paying Trend Micro PC Cillin is good too,. It also has spyware protection. It is lightweight and does an excellent job. It catches many things that Norton misses.
Panda antivirus is also another good one.
Whatever you do DON'T GET MCAFEE! It is without a doubt the most ineffective virus solution out there.

SAV Corporate Edition is much better on the system (not memory hogging). It does a good job scanning for all types of problems.

I am using McAfee corporate edition and it's fantastic. I haven't had a single virus/worm since I started using it, but it caught many worms online while I was loading some web pages etc.

Skip all the memory-saving, software-tweaking techniques and upgrade to ATLEAST 1gb of ram. you dont want to limit a great thinkpad by slowing it down with so little ram. if your cheap though you could always disable unneeded services, startup items, and systray items that are hogging up your ram.

McAfee corporate may very well be good(I've never seen it), but the consumer product is so bad it is dangerous.

Just plugged in a 512mb stick. Performance has been improved dramatically. Boot up time is still not up to my liking. Now it is time for a backpack. Anyone has the High Sierra magnum backpack? I would like to see a real life picture of that bag. It appeals aesthetically the most to me.
