My PII400 came in and I installed it into my 770 that came factory equiped with a PII233.
First off, my machine normally shows 261mb of ram, with the PII400 it shows 296. Cool I suppose as the 261 is a false reading. In reality it should be showing closer to 296.
However I get the dreaded error 192. The fan is plugged in and working. However, the computer will not boot into windows, just hangs at the POST screen.
I reset the CMOS and still the same thing happens. I removed all memory except on board to see if there was a conflict, and still the same thing happens.
Now, the only thing I can think of is that both the PII400 AND the fan had a thermal pad(or what I presume to be anyway) on them. The fan obviously had it installed from the factory, the PII400 I got also had one. I didn't think it could be a problem.
Any ideas on getting this to work? I've read a few success stories on here about PII400s running on standard 770s.
What's the secret? PII400 in a 770.

I don't THINK it is possible on the 200-233Mhz models,as these are not TRUE PII Cpu's,there actually a PI with MMX...I tried once with a 300 in place of the 233,and it gave me an error(can't remember which),and wouldn't let me boot....put the original cpu back in,and all was well....done it numerous times on ED\X\Z's and it always worked....

As Greg noted, the 770 and some early 600 machines are built on the Intel 430TX chipset and are not PII machines, but rather PentiumMMX machines.
To reliably upgrade to a PII CPU you need a later model 770 or 600 series machine that is built on the Intel 440BX chipset.

James
