Updating drivers and BIOS and first impressions of new T42

#1 Post by STS06 » Tue Aug 16, 2005 7:22 pm

I was told to update the bios version on my laptop (just got it today!). However, the site from which I would download the bios from, states that the date to the latest bios is May 2005. Since i just got my computer, do you think its necessary to update it?

The link I am looking at is the following:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-55386

My second question is that from the same site, do you recommend just downloading the automatic installation tool for drivers and etc.? If not, I have no clue which drivers to update on this comp.

First impressions:

This computer is fantastic..solid build and great look....I can't get myself to leave this machine!...so far, its everything people have said it would be...very glad for now, hopefully this doesnt change!

The T42 model I have is the following (just in case people would like to know): 2372N3U.
Thank you for the help!

Also, I just turned on the machine..unfortunately I have leave in a half hour. My only concern is through reading about battery charging and etc., I don;t remeber the do's and don'ts. So, is it ok to turn my comp off and leave? This may sound like a very stupid question but the battery issues have made me paranoid and I just want to make sure I'm behaving in my laptops best interest...haha. Just making sure...thanks for the help though!

You never need to remove the battery. You can leave it plugged in for years. I do, and my battery is fine.

The configuration you received is a "baseline" meaning that IBM tested all of the features with that set of software and released it as meeting spec.

Before you start updating drivers, BIOS, etc, You should familiarize yourself with all the wonderful little features IBM packed into the Thinkpad. Explore what the Access IBM button does, and the Access IBM menu (Start->Programs->Access IBM) has to offer, learn about setting up your wireless (if you have it), learn about Fn+spacebar, Fn+F3, Fn+F4, Fn+PgUp, etc all do. Explore the UltraNav features, fingerprint reader (if you got one) -- there's a lot to explore.

After you feel like you're ready to graduate from Thinkpad 101, then I suggest you download the new ThinkVantage Software Installer that will update your drivers and software automatically. Follow this link to get that software:
http://www-3.ibm.com/pc/support/site.ws ... OFT-UPDATE This program replaces the old Updater program.

Don't worry about your BIOS version. Unless there's a specific problem you know has been fixed, it's rare that a BIOS update makes any noticable changes at the user level. With the T42, most all of the problems that can be fixed in BIOS have been fixed long ago. I know that T43 users would love to see BIOS fix for their widely-reported fan problems, but T42 users can relax. Know that the new Software Installer also checks the BIOS for updates. If and when you do get to the point where you re-flash you BIOS, follow the instructions exactly. Undock your thinkpad, have a fully charged battery and have it plugged it wall power. Flashing BIOS is playing with sharp knives and if you screw up, your Thinkpad will wind up a paperweight attached to a really nice keyboard.

Enjoy your thinkpad!

If you look at the link in your first post in this thread, you see the list of updates. Click on the BIOS update link, and it will bring you to another page. On this page under: "I. Summary of changes", you can see what features the latest update offers. Choose the link: "complete list of changes fixed by this driver update", to see what each version of the BIOS update fixed or enhanced. This will help you to determine if you should update your BIOS.

There are several ways to determine which BIOS version you already have. If you launch ThinkVantage Software Installer, there is a choice to view current driver versions, or something like that. Or you can go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information. Your BIOS version will be displayed on the screen.

EDIT: Look under Start > All Programs > ThinkVantage > Software Installer. If it is there, you already have the Software Installer. However, I have noticed when new drivers become available, it seems that there is a new version of Software Installer to go with them. If you launch Software Installer, it will find any new versions of itself.
