DVDR drive options for R50e 1834-E8J

#1 Post by tabithaboof » Wed Aug 17, 2005 10:37 am

I have an r50e which I adore and I am thinking about the possibility of putting a DVDR/CDRW drive in to replace my DVD/CDRW. I dont seem to have found a source for these, if they even exist

Could anyone point me in the right direction or give me an idea of price?

Thanks alot!

The R5x uses the Ultrabay Enhanced drives, which IBM/Lenovo has listed on their site for around $249. The FRU they list on the website is 73P3312.

Do these support the ultrabay enhanced drive, I found a support video on how to change it by removing the keyboard, but the sales literature says that it doesn't support ultrabay devices or docking stations?

I thought all of the "e" models had a fixed bay - IE, you can't remove the drive and swap with another like you can with the ultrabay variants. I think this is one of the differences between the R50e and the R50 for example...

This is the link to the product info that tells you detailed spec and supported upgrades.

The link below has a link to a support movie on how to replace the fixed Optical Drive in a R50e.

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-55596 to remove and http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-55597 to install.

Ah OK, I stand corrected. Thanks, that's good to know as the e models are very reasonable in price...

Although it can be replaced I believe you are restricted to non-enhanced ultrabay devices which are:-

24x CD-ROM
8x DVD-ROM
24x24x24x/8x CD-RW/DVD combination drive

I don't believe you can buy a lenovo CDRW/DVDRW device for an R50e.
