the lid of my T21 is shocking me (literally) !!

#1 Post by matty » Wed Aug 17, 2005 8:55 pm

At first, I thought it was my imagination. But then after spending some time feeling around, I found a spot where I can actually feel electricity being discharged into me.
This only happens whilst touching the lid, and I assume its where the rubber coating of the metal is thin or maybe a microscopic spot where there the rubber has worn off. Its easier to feel on the corners and edges too.
I have never heard of such a thing in my life! I was shocked by an arcade game when I was a kid (no super powers yet) but not by a laptop, and especially not my beloved 2647-FX1 !
Anyone have any thoughts?
My battery was completely discharged this weekend but other than that the machine is running fine (working on it right now)

The inverter, and of course the backlight, both work with exceedingly high voltages and it's not unknown for either and/or both to throw some stray voltage that bites a bit.

The connecting screw hole for the VGA port on my 2373-GEU tingles my exposed thigh when wearing shorts and the laptop's on my lap with my legs crossed.

My 2373-GGU (exact same T41P) doesn't do this.

Go figure.

James

You're kidding, right? The backlight is a cold cathode fluorescent lamp that runs at high voltage and extremely low current.

Typical invertor power outputs (NEC/TOKIN) are around 700 volts at 5 milliamps, somewhere around 80 kHz.

I am very confident that you do not depend on the rubber coating to protect you. That should all be isolated inside the screen assembly and so you should be getting this fixed (quickly). ... JD Hurst

Thanks for the correction, I had meant to write voltage (V), not current (A).

Not kidding about the bleedover voltage however.

electric shock

#6 Post by Paul Unger » Fri Sep 23, 2005 2:30 pm

I've got a T42 (2373 3UU) that I've just gotten a shock from. While on AC and on my lap while wearing shorts, I could feel current coming from any exposed metal--especially the case screws on the bottom of the machine, but also the external monitor port on the RH side. What's up?! Anyone else experienced this? I don't know how long it's been doing this as normally the computer is on a desk and all I'm touching is the keyboard . . . Anyone else experienced this?

I have felt this from timt to time on my T21, mostly on the left side where the PCMCIA port/bay is, running your fingers there give a little tingle from time to time. You notice it when you want to move the T21 around the table, thats where your left hand naturally goes to grip it.

I find i feel it more if my feet are barefoot on the concrete ground than if they were resting on a wooden ledge of the table.
