X20 with only 192MB

#1 Post by cindy » Fri Aug 19, 2005 2:30 am

I installed a PC133 256MB 144-pin So-DIMM (Infineon HYS64V32220GDL-7.5-D) (I think it's high density...) on my IBM ThinkPad X20 2662-36T.
It now shows a total of 192MB in the BIOS.

And I am puzzled, I thought it either recognize the full capacity of the RAM or none at all, why half? (128MB+64MB)

I plowed through the forum and I wonder if there really isn’t any other way than finding a low density PC100 256MB memory for my X20 to show up with 320MB?

Is it possible that even though it shows 192MB in the BIOS, but in reality the X20 is working at 320MB?

The BIOS version is 2.25 (IZET9DWW), Date: 2003-4-17, Embedded Controller Version: 1.19.

Is there any tweaks available to somehow fix the problem?
Thanks!

it only recognises half because the pc133 256 meg sodimm is not entirely compatible with your laptop. The x20 can only make use of low density 256 megabyte pc100 sodimms (which can be easily identified because they have 8 chips on each side, for a total of 16).
Most 256mb pc133 sodimms are high density and have 4 chips on each side, which means the laptop only recognises half. While it's a fairly odd problem, it's a very very common one :)

It's actually not an X20/21 specific issue, either. It's an issue with the entire i440BX family of chipsets (which the i440ZXM is a part of - the ZX is a budget version of the BX (read: only supports two "DIMMs", instead of 4 with the BX - it's a moot point on a laptop that only has room for one SODIMM and some memory on board), the ZXM is a mobile version of the ZX)

Kahlon.com part KIBML56 is what I'm running in my X21, FWIW. That'll cost you a bit much, though. Look for 16-chip SODIMMs. Usually, they're PC100, but there ARE PC133 ones. They SHOULD still work - even IBM's 256MB FRU is PC133.
