Mozilla Firefox pop block not working
Mozilla Firefox pop block not working
I first used Mozilla browser and then later Mozilla Firefox 1.0.6 browser, and in these 2 to 3 years, I've enjoyed the peace and freedom from pop-up ads while surfing the internet. However, lately, my Mozilla Firefox 1.0.6 has let in pop-up ads although I repeatedly enabled the pop-block feature. Do other users have this same problem, and how did you solve the problem? Thanks.

They might be Macromedia Flash popups. Try this:
Type about:config in Firefox's address bar
Right-click in a blank area, select New, then Integer
In the dialog box, type privacy.popups.disable_from_plugins and click OK
In the next dialog box, type 2 and click OK
Recognized settings for this pref:
0: open allowed
1: the opened windows are treated as popups, but they're allowed to open
2: the window is a popup, block it
Type about:config in Firefox's address bar
Right-click in a blank area, select New, then Integer
In the dialog box, type privacy.popups.disable_from_plugins and click OK
In the next dialog box, type 2 and click OK

Did the steps above (which are same as in mozilla site suggested by beerak), but unfortunately, they still pop up. The problem is that these popups are very hyperactive type; they flash, icons jumps all over the screen, etc - and are very distracting.
Have I missed some thing?
More ideas welcome.

Maybe you have some spyware on your machine, have you gotten popups when firefox wasn't open or when you weren't browsing the web? Try either adaware (from lavasoft) or spybot search and destroy, both are free to use and will detect and remove many types of spyware that could cause these popups. Also make sure the site causing your popups isn't on your *allow* sites list.

These popups only appear when browsing with Firefox. Have been, and still, deligently scanning with Lavasoft's Adaware every 2 or 3 days. Stopped Spybot; had problem with it previously. Never allowed any pop-up in my Firefox. Still getting popups.
Probably, as Dennis wrote, has to do with Macromedia Flash which I downloaded in order view certain website videos, but I followed his instructions and yet pops still enter the browser. Strange thing is, I've installed Macromedia Flash many months ago, and these popups only started appearing a week ago.
Will report my findings when the mystery is solved. Thanks for replies.

Pop-unders
I uninstalled Firefox due to the pop-under issues, and I switched back to IE6. It's a sad day when Microsoft's own IE outperforms. With IE and Google toolbar, I've never had a pop-up or pop-under. (No, I've not tried Firefox with the newly-available Google toolbar, but I'm really not seeing a reason to. The content matters to me, not the delivery .)
