Can I Use Partition Magic to split C:\ even with Pre-Desktop

#1 Post by w0qj » Sat Aug 20, 2005 9:47 am

Can I Use Partition Magic to split C:\ even with Pre-Desktop Partition?

I use T42 (Model: 2373-K5H), and plan to keep my Pre-Desktop hidden partition (about 10 GB presently, jugding from my "lost" HDD space from my hard drive info.

***Can I Use Partition Magic to split C:\ into C:\ & D:\, even with Pre-Desktop Partition still around?

<I realize that if i do a "product recovery" using the hidden partition/Access_IBM, it will re-combine my C:\ & D:\ partitions, which is fine by me.>

Reason being that I wish to segregate my data into its own separate D:\ partition, to help defragmentation.

Many thanks for everyone's help in advance!

I have a t42 also, I have three HD 2 40G's (factory) and one 10G I got out of an old fiery RIP system. I have used partition commander to set up another drive on one of the 40Gs for storing technical manuals, it works great. My experience has been, unless you go into bios and disable security in the pre desktop area you will not affect it. I tried add the pre desktop area to the C drive with partition commander, it would not budge, you could however format that area but could not merge it unless you disable pre desktop security. The pre desktop partition is just around 4.9 to 5G's according to partition commander. It is also a good idea to make a set of R&R CD's just in case.

Yes, partition magic can be used to split the C: drive and it would not affect the PreDesktop Area.

Actually it does affect the pre-desktop area. The blue Access IBM button will not work at boot-time because of the extra partition(s). The pre-desktop area will not be destroyed or overwritten, though.

See here for more details.
