Well, I think I could probably 'drague' a bit with the Golf, but I'm pretty sure any self respecting woman would know when to give up - confronted with a Thinkpad they just wouldn't stand a chance ! Seriously though, it's been a while (on the woman front that is) and I'm not altogether sure I'd know what to do...they seem to be missing the Ctrl-Alt-Delete button...

Ok guys - now here's a serious question. Had the beast about 5 hours now, and I've spent a little time playing - inbetween obligations like 'work' etc. and I've noticed something that I'm not at all happy about.
While loading Norton (a full version) everything just hung - not disk, full display but no noise - zilch.
While searching for a network connection - same thing. This has now happened about 5 times - and I don't think it's normal. Should I ask IBM to send me a new hard disk, do a recovery and see what gives? Or is this indicative of worse problems - seems a shame as the screen really is perfect.
Any clues for sudden hangs? Any diagnostics useful to run? (Not being used to modern Thinkpads...)

Oh you scamp you, I know you'd turn me upside down, twirl me around all at the same time as sucking on a chupa chups lolly and push pop.G-Man wrote:Vicky,
Of course you are an exception. I would never use Ctrl-Alt-Del on you, and I would never turn you off... but turn you... you know.

You know I forgot all about Push Pops until the other day when I saw them at the counter of a local shop, [censored] I've not seen those since I was a kid.
http://www.candyfavorites.com/shop/shopexd.asp?id=269 - me want
Sounds like I need to find my Ctrl Alt Delete button and sort out my Task Manager... seems it's running a bit haywire
Vicky
Can I say that?

Possible - but would that really hang the system completely? I've never had that happen on the T21 (admitedly with it's DLINK PCMCIA, not built in) or my daughters 600e...seems a bit radical - more like a hd freeze.
The HD however, has just passed the PC doctor tests with flying colours - I'll run it a few more times...
Till then, I'll scan the network gubbins - why not !

Sorry, I was working. What if you leave the Task Manager always on, so you can see what's wrong when the system hangs again (since the Task Manager won't come up when it hangs). I think (and hope) it's a software issue and not hardware. I told you that you won't sleep much tonight.
What Norton is that?

Working? Wots that??
Norton Systemworks - don't really like it, but there's a copy of Antivirus 2004 so I use that.
Not bad, after I've finished a scan I'll start the Task manager...
As for it being software, I'm inclined to think so to as the Access Connections can't seem to get their collective heads around my wireless home network (DLink DI-614+) while directly coding on the network connections seems to hold - very wierd. When the AC finally get a grip, it only lasts a few minutes before dropping off again. And there I was thinking IBM's a/b/g card was better than the Intel one.

Update (had to find a machine here running XP):
1. Right-click the My Network Places icon on your Windows desktop.
2. Choose the Properties option.
3. Right-click the network connection for the wireless network adapter.
4. Choose the Properties option.
5. Click the Wireless Networks tab.
6. Uncheck the Use Windows To Configure My Wireless Network Settings option.

Firstly the wireless; since turning off the Wireless Zero config, A/ the wireless comes on fine - connects and seems to stay put and B/ I seem to have lost the Wireless Networks tab ! (not that I wanted it anyway - it causes me no end of problems on my machines at work)
Secondly, I think the problem of the system hanging is PROBABLY due to the second bar of 512 Mo of RAM I bought - again, I've had similar problems at work so I took it out and so far so good (Yeah I know, I'll probably have my mouth full of hat soon...)
I'll see how things go tomorrow - many many thanks for your input.

G-man - Bill sent me a stick of GoldenRam - to be honest I've never heard of it, being a Kingston/Crucial type of guy (!!)
Erik - sounds interesting - my company buys me Norton, which is the principle reason I'm using it, but I have no particular 'passion' for it - we'll have to see - heck a new car and a T42 - gotta make economies SOMEWHERE !
