Ulrabay 2000, A20M

#1 Post by JimmyD » Sun Aug 21, 2005 7:13 pm

Someone please take a min. and straighten me out. I can't find an Ultrabay 2000 for a pretty nice A20.
I apparently don't know what I'm looking for. I bought a DVDROM for the TP and thought it would fit right in the open bay, however it's about a 1/4 " inch thick and the connector is about 1/2 the size of the connector in the TP bay. It ofcourse doesn't fit.
I've been all over the WEB but am to [censored] stupid to determine what I'm looking for.
If you've got a sec. , help an old man out ok? jimmy

You need the fixture/bracket from original Ultrabay 2000

I upgraded CD-ROM to DVD/CD-RW combo on my A20M with the one derived from HP's. Basically the core is the same but you need to install the fixture from a real Ultrabay 2000 devices. If you don't have one, bid one complete cheap Ultrabay 2000 CD-ROM from eBay around $20. It takes some work but won't be difficult. Most likely you will hit a fitting issue on the face plate. I used Loctite to glue and fix the problem. It may or may not work in your case. Depends on your luck the shape on the replacement device. Good luck!

charlie, thank's for the reply. I've ordered a CDROM Ultrabay drive and will see about making the swap of the Ultrabay connection to the DVD.
Thank you for the reply, jimmy

Just get the correct CDRW/DVD Ultrabay 2000 drive. There are lots of them on ebay.

I bought one from Bill Morrow, he may still have some for sale.

There are later combo CDRW/DVD burning drives if that's what you are looking for but they are considerably more money.

Did you remove and put the CDROM backplate on the bare DVDROM? The backplate adapts the standard bare optical drive connector to the IBM ultrabay connector.

Nolonemo; I tried to but the drive "connector's" are different physical size , there location on the backplate match-up but the actual connector wont connect together. jimmy
