100GB drive - please advise
I'm dying to replace the 30GB/4200rpm drive on this machine, and I'm seeing 2.5in, 100GB/5400rpm drives for well under $200. Do I just order one, or do I need special mounts or adapters for IBM?
The 80GB/5400 rpm unit from Lenovo for $299 (last seen on sale for $224.31) seems like a downright ripoff, no matter how much the purist in me considers it. Does anyone know a reason to spend nearly twice as much for less storage?

No reason not to do this but ... consider Seagate dubious drive reputation before you purchase one. I would personally stay away from Seagate but other than that, just remove the older drive, transfer the mounting hardware to the new one and insert it. This is of course only for the hardware part of the job ....

Seagate is considered to have the best reputation of all HD's. It did for years, only to be increased by the 5 year warranty they now give.jpdarcis wrote:No reason not to do this but ... consider Seagate dubious drive reputation before you purchase one.
Unfortunately it appears IBM is forbidding anyone from using a non IBM/Hitachi drive without issues.
Sorry but this is not the case. I do not see why you could not install a Seagate in a Thinkpad. The problem is, I have read several reports of this drive being particularly noisy, to the point users stuck with them would use them only in external enclosure for backup purposes. Seagate has built HD for Desktops for a long time, which does not mean their drives were better than others, but this is another issue. AFAIK, they are fairly new in the 2.5" HD segment, and it seems to show...
ZipZoomFly.com generally has good prices. These are bare drives so you would need to remove the caddy from your current drive. This is very easy as long as you have a small screwdriver.

Re: 100GB drive - please advise
I've found that not using an IBM HDD caused a 2010 POST error on a T43. The Esc key had to be pressed at every startup. IBM recommends a firmware upgrade, but the drive didn't need it, found out after creating seventeen diskettes. Even hacking them, suggested on another forum, didn't help.r50cheapskate wrote:Does anyone know a reason to spend nearly twice as much for less storage?
It may not affect you, but keep it in mind.
