NMI Parity Error...

#1 Post by cbirchette » Mon Aug 22, 2005 12:46 pm

ok, I know that this is commonly associated with memory being the culprit, but the memory has been checked. This is a fairly new machine (bought the T43 from UNC) and would doubt it would be a hardware problem. As I reviewed the microsoft support site, it says that the BIOS can contribute to this error and to possibly update it. Now, I have updated to the latest BIOS, so I'm wondering if I should wait this problem out until another update is released or go back to the last previous version. Is anyone else getting this problem and how did you solve it? I know the problem is really triggered by azureus since java is a resource hog and really tests the memory...but I checked it with memtest86 and no problems there. I don't know what else to do so please help.

Note: When I received the system at stock settings, I never got this error. After mass updating through the lenovo thinkvantage software updater the problem occurs (I still think it is the BIOS). Thanks for your responses.

Extra information: I have around 47 processes with symantec antivirus (ugh), the usual ibm utilities, samurize, and rainlendar. Memory is 2x512 and again problem only happened after updates...

I know you doubt it could be a hardware problem but humor me... Take out your internal wireless card and tell me if the problem goes away. Many times the culprit isn't the RAM and isn't the BIOS, but is the PCI bus which your wireless card is attached to. If that solves the problem you likely have a bad wireless card or slot. Just a guess (for now). Of course the card might just be seated improperly so if removing it solves the issue replace the card and see if you can duplicate the error before asking for a repair.

I know I did have a few problems with the wireless card after it would crash. DHCP would fail to get an ip address and I'd be stuck on the acquring the ip address. Once I fixed it and replaced the dll's I never had the problem again so I don't know. Right now I don't have the tools to open the laptop, so I will get some tomorrow...thanks for your time.

Nmi: parity error -> Broadcom ethernet

#4 Post by kimr » Sat Sep 24, 2005 9:56 pm

I just started getting this NMI a couple of weeks ago on a T43 that has been rock-solid since I got it in February. After removing extra memory, updating drivers, bios, etc, I finally noticed that after a crash, Window would detect the ethernet adapter (wired, not wireless) as a new device. I disabled the onboard Broadcom ethernet in the bios and the NMI errors went away. They had been occurring every two hours or more frequently.

I'm going to turn on the card tomorrow and see how long it takes to get an NMI error. Then I'm calling IBM and asking for a replacement of the system board, since unfortunately the Broadcom is built-in.
---------------------
Follow-up: I was able to get a "PCI Bus" error running PC Dr. DOS, as well as
a failed Broadcom adapter test (1 out of 200 test passes failed), so IBM/Lenovo says to send it in.
