wireless comes and goes
wireless comes and goes
Hi,
I have a ThinkPad t40p. Today for the 3rd time in the past 3 weeks, the wireless connection just goes. it isn't the wireless because the fellow I office with has a Mac and his wireless is up and running while mine is down. I have had to cold reboot every time to get my wireless back. I just noticed while I was typing this that my wireless connection "flickered." I saw the message in the lower right tray that I had no wireless connection, and almost immediately I received a message that it was good again. The Thinkpad sits literally between the router and modem. So distance isn't a problem.
Any thoughts about this???
Frank

i had a similar problem while helping a friend configure his 802.11b netgear router.. he lives in a dense residential area.. we tried about 6-7 channels on the wireless settings before we finally found one that didn't seem to have that problem. you may not have the same problem but its worth a shot.. we tried probably 6-7 different ones before we found one that works as it should.
Hi,
Same problem here, I have the problem, with 2 Netgearrouters, a Linksys, and in the ofiice with an cisco ap.
After the cold reboot it is working for a longer time.
I read here in the forum that this problem have many people, someone
said that this is the IBM access connections software, and that the Atheros Client should be better, I have tried it yesterday to uninstall Access Connections, and use the Atheros Client instead. But I noticed also strange wireless problems.
It looks like that the problem exists only for Thinkpads with the IBM wlan module, I haven't read a post here for the Intel wireless module.
I hope someone has a soluton for this issue.
Thanks,
Joker

Re: wireless comes and goes
I had a t40 do the exact same thing, it would come and go. I sent it into IBM and they returned it with some software updates and said that nothing was wrong. It never did it again.fjs08 wrote:Hi,

Hi,
Do you know which software updates??
I've updated the whole ibm software/drivers collection, but the problem
still exists. Also the Atheros Client have problems.
So it seems that the problem is the wireless lan driver, maybe I should
try an older version, and not the new one.
Today I called the IBM support, but they don't know anything about
a problem, so not really a help for me.
Maybe you can post your driver and ibm access connections versions here, so we can compare it. which could also be a keyplayer is the powermanagement software that comes from ibm.
thanks,
joker.

I have unchecked the checkbox in windows wireless configuration, so I think that should be ok. I also tried to stop the Windows Wireless Zero service completely, but without that on startup, the machine has a problem to bringup the desktop, there is a 2 mins delay.
Also the Atheros Client is uninstalled when I try my luck with access connections, or vice versa.
Now I try the connection with power management disabled in the driver properties page. Maybe this is the problem, I don't know
But I think it's a software problem, because there are a lot of people reporting such problems.

Short story - are you sitting comfortably? Good, then I'll begin...
2373-CWU IBM a/b/g wireless
Last night, after the delivery of my new T42 I had tremendous trouble getting access connections to stabilise on my home network (D-Link 614+) and I posted here and had G-man suggest the 'Wireless Zero' which I tried, and it seemed to hold.
For various reasons too boring to list here, I decided to de a recovery from CD this morning. I eventually got this working (Cause I'm a bit thick) and when I got home this evening AC homed straight in on the network and have been locked-on ever since.
The only reasonable conclusion, it seems to me, is that there is a subtle difference between what's actually in the preload, and what is on the CD's. Now I'm not suggesting we all go out and do a recovery, but it might be worth trying to find out what went into the CD's...

The neverending wireless story seems to be solved !!
After the try to use not the IBM AcessConnections Software,
and many other hints that I have tried with no success,
I called the IBM hardware support this week, and they sent me
a spare wireless card to replace mine.
After the replacement I never lost the wlan connection again!
The replacement card has the production date 05-2004,
and the original one 03-2004, maybe this charge has a problem.
So if you still have connection lost problems with your wireless
network, give it a try and call for a replacement.
