function closed lid T42

#1 Post by schmaud » Tue Aug 23, 2005 10:22 am

Hi ,

is there a way to render the function of a closed lid dependent on the power status?

I woudl like to have the machine go to standby if on batteries, and to keep tunning on ac.

is this possible on a T42?

tanks!

read the question a bit better?

its obvious how to make it do an action when the lid is closed but that stays the same whether its AC or battery, which is what the original question was..

i would like to know if this is possible too..

oh, so its a 2 part condition, i didnt read that into it originally. I dont know of any way to tell it to go to standy with a shut lid and battery power, and stay on with a shut lid and ac power.

I've actually been looking for something similar, that would do MY thing when I close the lid, I'm more interested in locking windows than standby, but if there would be something that supports custom commands, that'd work for both.

No luck yet, seems we've got to start programming ourselves :)

ThinkPad Configuration -> Power Management -> Power Schemes -> Settings for Portable/Laptop power scheme

or

Use the Battery Maximiser Wizard to create a custom Power Scheme

This is pretty easy to do under Linux.
You get an ACPI event named "LID", and can read the status anytime. If you run the APCI daemon, you can run any script you like when it opens/closes.

I too would prefer to be able to close the lid and only go to standby on battery (usually headed for the bag). On AC, I'd rather just close the lid to protect the screen + keyboard while still running.

We're dealing with Windows here, I presume, in general it's indeed rather a simple task, just takes time. AFAIK Windows also sends such an event to every program, so one just needs to make one that listenes and runs a custom command, perhaps even checking the power status to render a specific one.

How does that answer the question?
We're talking about rendering a function dependent on the power status, the regular Windows' lid-functions only do one task on all power statuses.
Kidtriton already read the question wrong, appears there're now two of you :)

Did you TRY it?

Nonny's suggestions allow you to set the unit to separate actions depending on whether you're on battery or AC.

I use this utility on my system and have it set to go into Standby on battery and Do Nothing when on AC.

Well, yes, I did :)
Am I missing something here?
I've got the Windows Power Options Properties open, Power Schemes tab open, which ever scheme I choose from the drop-down has the same options to choose from under Settings <scheme name> scheme.
System standby/hibernate drop-downs let me choose the time after which it'll suspend/hibernate itself.
Under the Advanced tab there's the "When I close the lid.." option, that only seems to have one possibility for both AC/DC.

Are you sure you're talking about closing the lid and the machine doing different things depending on power source and not the automatic idle-suspend?
