Problem with Toshiba 40Gb in T42

Hi

Just got a T42 a couple of weeks back and am having problems that I assume are HDD related. Basically the HDD (a Toshiba 40Gb. I forget the designation) head accesses every 4-6 seconds regardless of what the computer is doing. This is annoying. It also affects the fan speed so that when the fan is on (more or less permanently from 20-30 minutes after switch on) the fan blips every 4-6 seconds in sync with the HDD access.

In addition, I have had 4 BSODs. All happened when copying and pasting (or perhaps cutting and pasting) a few tens-hundreds of Mbs of files from one folder to another. Each time the BSOD mentions something to do with page files and non paged area, and the computer promptly reboots. Aa far as I can tell, each time the files have successfully moved/copied, and there has been no data damage. But I'm not happy

Any ideas please on the cause and solution options. I will call Lenovo tomorrow if I get the chance.

The warranty on my machine began only on 27 July.
