Recovery CD's
Recovery CD's
I ordered (and have) the factory recovery CD's from IBM for my T42. Than being said, is there any reason(or advantage) for me to create any kind of recovery or boot CD's with my machine or am I all set?

You are all set.

Re: Recovery CD's
G-Man, but does the Recovery CDs have **everything* i.e. an identical setup to what came with the base system, from the factory? What about the DVD software, the IBM goodies (Access Connections, wallpapers, themes, drivers), and the extras like Adobe Reader 6, McAfee Antivirus etc.?
And Leon, what number did you call for the recovery cds?
I called:
1-800-ibmserv
option 2
option 3
option 1
but dclee012, in this thread:
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=1087&start=0
says it should be:
1-800-426-7378
option 1
option 1
option 1
What is the difference? When I called the former number and requested the Recovery CDs, the gentleman politely took my info, serial, and model number and said they'd be mailed to me. I also requested the Lotus Suite that is supposed to come free with ThinkPads but his department doesn't handle that request. Is there any other software that we can request besides the Recovery CDs and Lotus Suite?
Also, how did the ThinkPad I received register XP with Microsoft (or did it even do so?) if I had no internet connection during the startup procedure (where it asks you for a machine name, set regional settings etc.)?

Re: Recovery CD's
The Recover CD set includes everything that originally came with your TP (all the drivers and extra applications you already mentioned). It's the same as the Hidden Partition on your hard drive. Don't worry about the Windows registration. I never did it.

1. Search for the FRU number of the italian keyboard in the Hardware Maintenance Manual for T42.
2. Enter this number in the approbriate field in one of the www.ibm.it pages. IBM prices are very reasonable, your keyboard should be between 50 and 100 Euro.
3. Unfortunately IBM does not sell recovery CDs in a different language than the one of the os of the notebook as delivered- at least I didn't succeed. I doubt that Bill has the italian version.

I used the first set of numbers:
1-800-ibmserv
option 2
option 3
option 1
No questions asked, beyond model/serial number and purchase date, and - more impressive, imo - no time on hold listening to treacly music! (Call placed at 5:30 PT if anyone wants to try replicating the experience.)
