Max temperature on a T41p? Video performance issues.
I am currently helping to debug a fairly powerful and demanding live visual presentation software package.
We have noticed an issue with "stuttering" of the video output, that only appears on some laptops, including an IBM T41p.
Is it possible that this is somehow temperature related?
At idle, this machine is usually at 50°.
When one animation is running, it moves up to about 58°. (Minor stuttering)
When three or more animations are running, it very quickly moves up to about 65°. (Major stuttering)
The same machine maxes out at 77° when doing CPU intensive work (DVD rendering).
Obviously the CPU load increases with added animations, but there is still a lot of headroom with three layers - the load is typically around 44% percent.
The animations are running 100% from RAM, so there is no disk bottleneck involved.
Is it possible that the increased temperature is causing the GPU (ATI FireGL) to become unstable? Note that there are no artifacts in the video output - just this peculiar stuttering.

Could be heat related, I think it does passive cooling at 88deg cel though so maybe not. Undervolting the CPU with CHC would probably help if heat is the issue. I had problems with the game Everquest on the T41p (would start crawling during major battles). After undervolting, I haven't seen this.

My T41p is somewhat of a frankenstein with a dothan 1.7 ghz cpu so not sure that my settings would help. Also every CPU will have a certain amount of variance. Best bet is to start with the 17x multiplier and start reducing by two steps. I reduced to 1.084 at 17x then about 2 steps less for each 14x, 12x, 10x, 8x, 6x.
