My T42 randomly shuts down while I am using it.

#1 Post by DeionDavid » Sat Aug 27, 2005 6:41 pm

I have a T42 (2378), and a lot of times while i am working on normal apps it just suddenly turns off and I have to power it back on. Does anyone have experience with this issue?

Please help.

Take a look in the event viewer and see if anything corresponds to when it shuts down.

Could also be a bad power connection.

It might be a heating problem...

Did you check the temperature? Any error messages?

does it show a blue screen before shutting down?
if it does, you have to upgrade you Rescue and Recovery software... that may be the cause!

are you undervolting?

i was running 0.796v @ 6x and it would run fine without crashing but randomly it would crash when copying files to my other machine.

after lots of troubleshooting the network, hard drive, the actual files being copied and power adapter, i tried upping the voltage up 1 notch to 0.812v and not had a problem with copying files since.

syhead: There is no blue screen, it just suddenly completely shuts off and I have to power it back on myself.

laz: When the computer shuts down, it does so randomly so i have no chance to prepare for it happening.

pphilipko: no error messages

skanky: can you please tell me how to change the voltage? I'll try to give that a try.

Any relationship between this and times when you're running CPU intensive software?
That would be a strong indication of the overheating already mentioned.

You can change the voltage through CHC (Centrino Hardware Control). Here's a link:

i downloaded the centrino hardware control prog and my settings are:

CPU Clock: 1701 MHz (17x)
CPU voltage: 1.324V (max performance)

and the multipliers? they are set at:
6 -> .988V
17 -> 1.324V
17 -> 1.324V
17 -> 1.324V
17 -> 1.324V
17 -> 1.324V
17 -> 1.324V
17 -> 1.324V

They're perfectly normal figures, so it must be something else...

Is this still happening to your laptop?!
