T42 with Targus PA350 possible ?

#1 Post by pnijs » Sun Aug 28, 2005 7:00 am

Hello,
recently I purchased a Thinkpad T42 type 2373-F2G.
I also still have my Thinkpad 600E.

I have a Targus PA350 universal auto/air power adapter with a power of 70 W continous output which I use on the 600E.
The power tip according the documentation is 16.5VDC/2.2 A

Can I use this also for the T42 without damaging it ?

Apologies for bumping up a message from three years back, but I just found my own PA-350 and I was hoping to use it with a T42p (2373-GVU). Targus (unsurprisingly) has yet to respond to my customer service request of a week ago.

Anyone know:
1) If it can be used safely?
2) What tip?

As to 1), according to the FAQ, it should work (T42 needs 16 volts at 4.5 amps).

As to 2), the tiplist says to use #7 (T20 and T42 use the same adapter/tip). You seem good to go.

Thanks so much -- I spent time on their site and didn't see this at all. Now emailing them to see if they have that tip anywhere -- doesn't seem to be in my ziploc bag.

one more thing

You're welcome. One important point I forgot to mention above: if you have a multimeter (electrical tester), it would be wise to test the voltage and current output of the adapter once you have the correct tip, to make sure it conforms to the specs above, before you do the acid test with your ThinkPad. Good luck!

You're definitely getting serious on me now ;) Probably not a bad idea to run by a friend who has a meter before using it. Hopefully IBM put a little fault tolerance in there. The juice isn't always steady.

Of course, all this depends on being able to find the tip for it.
