Computer won't shut down

#1 Post by STS06 » Mon Aug 29, 2005 9:51 am

So today I wake up and turn on the T42 for some news (about hurricane Katrina). After checking it, I click shut down and the computer won't shut down!!

I clicked it multiple times, clicked "restart"...nothing would work. I tried "hibernate" and it worked....cuz i was running out of time. I brought it with me to work, brought it out of hibernation and it still won't turn off!

This thing is only 3 weeks old...and its perfect besides this BS!

I turned the computer off by removing the "ask me what to do" option when pressing the power button. After that I held it down for a few secs, like any XP machine, and it shut down.

Also for some weird reason, the fingerprint reader I have on to access Windows is really really slow. THis also happens when the computer comes out of sleep/standby mode. The darn thing will take 10 secs to read my swipe. At times, it wont work at all and i have to Cntrl+Alt+Del and type in my password.

EDIT: Computer is shutting down properly besides that one fluke..which I'm not sure why it happend. Does this indicate anything or is that just windows xp screwing up?

The FingerPrint Reader is still posing some problems. It won't register my swipes (it'll just sit there).

I really didn't want to send this comp in.especially since there are no pixel problems and NOTHING else was wrong. Shigh.

Thanks for any help.

It was probably XP acting up because some program would not close properly. Not uncommon for XP.
If your fingerprint software is acting up it might be the cause of windows hanging up. The next time it does that do a ctrl-alt-del, look at the running processes and see what is using all the cpu time up and kill that process.

Thanks for the the help Carbon_Unit.

I have a feeling you're right b/c when the window for the finger print reader pops up, the computer is processing something (mouse pointer has an hourglass). So I will try what you said. It doesnt look like any hardware problem now...so thats good.

I also wanted to know if you could help me curb some of the myriad of IBM programs that start when windows does. I know how to shut them down, but I don;t know which ones I should in my best interest. I'd appreciate any help with that, thank you.
