PCMCIA tuner or USB for my T43 ?

#1 Post by danny_isr » Tue Aug 30, 2005 10:26 am

i already asked here about HDTV - USB
but i think this is a bit different topic so i opened a new one

i just notice that newegg got PCMCIA TV tuner cards .
any one used something like this ?
i would think they are more “elegant “ . no need to power them , no wires less over all hassle. but what is the quality and how they compare to the USB ones .
USB is more flexible , you can use them on a desktop as well

i'm debating between those two :

USB

Never get anything from AverMedia they are the worst TV card maker period.

USB is cheaper and can be used on other computers and devices.

Leadktek USB II is Analog so will use more power and looks well Analog.

Look at the USB 2.0 devices from VisionPlus / TwinHan http://www.twinhan.com/

Only DVB-T USB devices that are USB 2.0 will do HDTV. Many people think that the USB 1.1/2.0 ones actually do HDTV and they do not.

thanks for your answer !

can you explain what is DVB-T USB , i never heard of it before.

the advantage of the PCMCIA is just no hassle . i can open the laptop wile waiting in the airport for example and get TV there.
but if it's not working well , i guess i will stick with the USB one.

thanks

Moot point actually as you still have to plug in an antenna and the PCMCIA card will hang out the side too.

DVB is the Digital Video Broadcast standard there are currently 4 versions. DVB-S (Satellite), DVB-C (Cable), DVB-T (Terrestrial aka Digital TV) and DVB-H (Handheld).

The difference between DVB-S/C/T is the different tuner for different frequency ranges.

Leadtek now finally make a Digital TV tuner PCI card but they still do not make a Digital TV USB tuner yet. If you go with analog the dscaler work to clean up the picture takes up proccessing power as well.

BTW those tiny antennas that came with the TinyUSB2 (aka TwinHan Beetle) work suprisingly well. It has a very good tuner.
