Software Installer collapses
I just upgraded IBM's Software Installer to version v3.14.0508. As I chose the option to install or upgrade driver(s) or software it contacts the web and initiates the search for newer versions of programs.
But; the search never completes and get a message of Microsoft error reporting service the the application (Software Installer) encountered the problem and needs to close.
Have any of you already upgraded the SI to this version and tried to upgrade software? Did you face the same problem? Have any of you completed the upgrading without problem and what would you suggest in my case.
PS.: I already uninstalled the SI and reinstalled it, rebooted machine, but nothing. No effect. Just keep getting the error message.

I installed V3.14.0508 on a client T30 without much thinking and it worked just fine. I had V3.13.0507 running on my own T41 (and working fine) so I upgraded to V3.14.0508 this morning and it is working fine as well. Found a new driver for Scroll Lock which was a 2003 driver - Interesting. I installed that to no ill effect and will look later to see what it does.

I made an earlier thread on this exact problem. After ignoring it for a month, I tried using it again...and incredibly, it WORKED!!?!?!
I still can't explain why it suddenly decided to work...
It could be a registry problem, so try downloading RegScrub. It might help.

Sorry I can't do it any more because I restored my system to a previous state. Have DLed Software Installer yet, but as soon as I get to connected to my network I will try.
Some were suggesting that the collapse was the consequence of the wireless driver though I am not so sure about that.
If I encounter those problems again even on the fresh system I will surely report.

Hi,
I have the same problem since I updated the software installed to the latest version...
In the connect.log, the last line before crash is:
[2005-09-08 19:48:08] Received : http://download.boulder.ibm.com/ibmdl/p ... wc42ww.xml : Wireless LAN Software for Cisco Wireless LAN Mini PCI card
however in software installer there is "wu4011s0_2_xml" in "Searching..." box when it crashes...
Any ideas?
thanks,
Darko

I just upgraded to the latest software installer and it has been a bit problematic. Half the time it just hangs when searching for latest drivers online, but works again once I restart it. For some reason I have also got two separate shortcuts in different folders both pointing to the same file.
One day I'll uninstall it completely and start again... though not until my dodgey system board is replaced.

I think (hehe*) that k2 in onto something here. Probably everything's ok with software installer, but occasionaly some .xml pages are not properly formatted in order that SI could use them. I'd say lack of fool (and bullet)-proof programming on the side of SI team (they wouldn't bother to check whether input file is or is not regular, rather what happens - happens logic
) The other day I heard from IBM's Help desk guy some rumors about not be able to contact IBM's server themselves due (suposedly) to a general "server swapping thing at Lenovo HC". Woe on them. But I payed good, solid cash... for what? This?

This is what I see as the last several entries in Connect.LOG

It's same with mine. I have R40
And even that's the reason i started to search a forum related to thinkpads, because i didn't found any place on the IBM site to report a error with that *NEW* installer that i so widely advertised on the site.
THe last line of my connect.log file is
Received : http://download.boulder.ibm.com/ibmdl/p ... wc42ww.xml : Wireless LAN Software for Cisco Wireless LAN Mini PCI card
I wonder now, how would they fix that, because even if they release a new version that fixes the problem, how are we supposed to download it with that broken installer ?!
Well of course we can search for it in the site, but its still their mistake that makes the customers life harder..
I don't know for you but i will blame it on LENOVO!
Before the changes on the thinkpad support site,(where IBM gets replaced with LENOVO) i never had problems with the software installer...

You can download the ThinkVantage Software Installer, as well as all other IBM/Lenovo updates (only Rescue and Recovery I did not see here, but you can get it from another page) starting at the following page: Software and Device Drivers - ThinkPaderazorbg wrote:I wonder now, how would they fix that, because even if they release a new version that fixes the problem, how are we supposed to download it with that broken installer ?!

You can download and install the updates manually if the Software Installer is not working for you. I have noticed that they replace the Software Installer every few weeks, so look for a new version.

New version avail at http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... estyle=ibm
i have installed on t21,t30 and t42p...no problems with updates. Sorry if you are still having problems

I'm currently downloading a bunch of stuff via the Software Installer (can't find the version number - if such exists) and it's taking forever. To make things worse it seems to stop randomly and I have to click the "Next" button again, so I can't even leave it to download overnight. One hour so far to download 5MB over a broadband connection. Come on, Lenovo, pay for some bandwidth!

A couple of things to try. Uninstall Software Installer with Add or Remove Programs in Windows Control Panel. Reboot. Go to link I posted above and download and install Software Installer again. See if it works. If it doesn't you can try to uninstall again then run a registry cleaner program before reinstalling.
Some possible things that might cause problems:
1. Make sure you are not connecting through a proxy server.
2. If you are connecting with DSL, Cable, or WiFi, and you have a router in addition to a modem in your setup (as two separate devices), make sure you are using PPPoE.
3. Make sure you haven't crippled Active X (I'm not sure if it's used though).
4. Make sure any firewall you are using hasn't shut off a necessary port, or hasn't put Software Installer in the do not allow list.
5. Check services in Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services. Make sure you have all necessary services running.

I also downloaded a lot of stuff a month ago relatively painlessly. It was just last night that I had the problem. I let the thing run, and sure enough when I checked this morning it was waiting for me to press "Next". But after that everything went quickly and I got everything installed.jdhurst wrote:I don't have that problem, so it may not be Lenovo. hey folks, I have the exact same problem
I have the same problem with the Software Installer, and I have tried almost everything to get it to work again. There is no firewall blocking my connection...
Earlier this week I did a complete factory reset of the harddrive, and whaddayaknow, the same problem after the reset. Should definetely prove the error is at IBM/Lenovo's server.
I too would strongly believe this is errors in the xml-file.
Today I also got a response from the IBM helpdesk, and they didn't even read the email, only generated an automated answer telling me my machine is out of the 30 day warranty.. 30 DAY warranty, wtf are they talking about? They cannot possibly mean that the 1 year warranty is hardware only??
After that email my positive view on IBM suddenly changed...
kind regards,
Idar

I feel the same as you... I too did the factory restore and nothing seem to be indicating that anything is wrong with my machine. There have to be a flaw in the program or Lenovo server.idander wrote:I have the same problem with the Software Installer, and I have tried almost everything to get it to work again. I think it must be the server that you happen to access.
I don't know if the copy of Software Installer that you download and install directs to a specific server, or if it goes to a certain server based on your IP address or information stored on your laptop (like which country it was sold to).
I have no problem with Software Installer, and I got mine from HERE.

Brothers, let us rejoice!
Our fathers at Lenovo HQ have looked upon us and had pity on us.
New v3.15.0510 eagerly awaits to be downloaded.
The feelings are overwhealming
Btw. works for me
