Rescue and Recovery 3 problem
Rescue and Recovery 3 problem
Some of you might know that Thinkpad released new version of Rescue can Recovery 3 on Aug 30. I installed this via installer. The installation went OK, but when I rebooted my Thinkpad, there pops up a message prompt asking me to input Windows password to enable Rescue and Recovery features. However, I never ever setup a Windows password to log on my PC, therefore, all password attempts failed to unlock this dialog window.
Called IBM service, the technician said I HAVE TO replace my hard drive, My god, that's huge operation. They said the security chip malfunctions after installing this new version of Rescue and Recovery software. Of coz I did not listen to that guy. I just use my previous backup via Rescue and Recovery to solve this problem. Now I am still use verion 2.0, but no annoying popup window after logon for non-existing password. I am so disappointed about IBM service guy. Any idea or comment?
I am using T42 2378FVU 512 MB, 9600 video card, 40 G HD.

I have the same problem in one laptop but I just haven't had the time to call service as I've been spending all my time with sales trying to solve delivery and customs issues before I leave tomorrow. If I have to replace my hard drive I will be more than a bit angry especially since I upgraded to a 7K60 which was not bought from IBM an is no longer under warranty! Are they planning to replce it with a new one? Lots of unanswered questions here so I'll wait for other solutions to be posted before I go "postal" on Lenovo (oops, IBM). I hate Lenovo more every day that goes by. IBM I just hate every other day.

Well it turns out you are right about the hard drive replacement solution. I called and was told the same thing. No work around. Now I have to wait for a call back by a supervisor because I upgraded my drives to 7K60's and they were not bought from IBM. Of course they not only will not want to replace them due to cost, but these drives are nowhere to be found in the market right now. So I wait to hear what they are going to do for me. As if I didn't already have enough to worry about before my trip.

Why do you seem to have this strong aversion towards Lenovo? Some comments such as "they can't do anything right" is just ridiculous.brainpicker wrote:I'm still waiting for my call. IBM may have screwed up SO badly on this one that it could cost them millions in damages. If this was Len-Oh-No! doing this I'd figure it was understandable as they can't do anything right. But IBM should have at least tested it on a Thinkpad or two you'd think?

OK. What HAVE they done right? They had three designs handed to them (T43p, X41, X41 tablet) and haven't been able to supply any of them. All they had to do was BUILT them, not design them. It's like the old "vaporware" the software companies used to pull on us back in the 80's. Get everyone excited about a product such that they put current plans on hold to wait for this superior breakthrough, take orders for the product after advertising the hell out of it, but then NOT be able to supply it in any quanity for over three months (yeah the software companies were worse). The X41 was announced in April and people STILL can't get one! When I got my T43p after a four month wait it had 6 bad pixels. I had to return it and could not bear to wait for another so I do without. My 2 X41's finally came and had 5 & 7 bad pixels respectively. I returned them and figured if I was going to wait I may as well order Tablets. Over two months later they ship them and then can't get the customs paperwork right so they sit for weeks (well, the one that's not lost in Alaska!). Now I could have expected THAT from the 1st shipments made by Len-Oh-No! back in May, but over four months later and they haven't got this customs thing down yet? Have you ever tried to call post sales? Now that Len-Oh-No! owns the division it's a 45 minute wait. Consistantly.pphilipko wrote:Why do you seem to have this strong aversion towards Lenovo? THAT'S why I have such dislike for Len-Oh-No!. They can't do anything right. And when THEY actually release a design that THEY have done from start to finish my prediction is they will be toast. Done. Finished. Of course that's only MY opinion but it's based on what I've seen so far.
What have you seen that tells you otherwise?

I have a solution! No need to send in your hard drive UNLESS you have a password protecting it OR you have encrypted files due to the chip password and you forgot one of these passwords.
Here is the solution (REMEMBER, this will reset everything so if you have password encrypted files you must back them up or you will not have access to them after you do this!):
-Shut OFF the computer.
-Press and hold the F1 key while turning ON the computer and do not let go of the F1 key until the BIOS program is visable.
-Go to Security.
-Now you will see a NEW option at the bottom to Clear the Security Chip.
-Choose that option and hit ENTER.
-Choose to CLEAR and again ENTER.
-F10 to restart saving changes.
Now when the Client Security Software starts you can go in without a password, though you will have to put one in to use the software.
If you do NOT want to use the software or a password then when you are in the BIOS also DISABLE the Chip Password. When you F10 and restart the same software will start, but this time it will only ask you if you want the chip enabled. Choose no. Now you are done.
It worked for me. I hope it works for you without having to have your drive replaced.

That's a great suggestion Brainpicker. I was just wondering, what other connotations does setting the security setting to CLEAR have? I say that because to the best of my knowledge, I have client security set to launch on startup and I've never had to use a password. that is, unless the fingerprint authorization I use on windows startup also launches the client security software.
Anywho, for what it's worth, I had the same problem with R&R2. It usually only occured when booting from a completly shutdown state, not when restarting or resuming. That said, the IBM tech person I spoke to suggested that I send in the laptop as this merited a motherboard replacement. When I heard that, I tried a number of self made hacks such as reinstalling r&r, doing a custom format, and updating the bios all without luck. Eventually I just uninstalled the software completely and began using Acronis TrueImage -- no complaints so far. The software is pretty cheap, efficent, and pretty to look at. Just a suggestion in case brainpicker's solution doesn't work for some of you.

Well, I upgraded to R&R3 and had no problems at all. The only thing I had to do was to opt out of installing the added client security thing. I only wished they made R&R3 accessible by using the blue Acccess IBM button.
But getting a new hard drive can't be that bad... Do they still want you to send back the old one?

My R&R3 installation on a T43 went also very well, even the CSS software works very well, I like the new feature to create an encrypted virtual drive.
My experience is that lenovo improved the former IBM software, see also the old "update connector" which never worked, now the new system updater is just excellent.

I'm a little confused. I also used the R&R3 update and came across the request to setup a password, which I did. But I then had the following message "The instance of cssauth.exe cannot start because of an initialization error".
I also installed the National Semiconductor TPM Device 1.18.0.6. When I installed this update is when I get the above cssauth.exe error message.
Everything with the Client Security Solution chip seems to work OK as long as I don't install the TPM 1.18.0.6 update.
Are these two updates related?
I have in my BIOS: using Passphrase Enabled, Supervisor Password Enabled, Power-On password Enabled, HardDisk1 password is "user" and Require password after hibernate Enabled. IBM Security Chip is Enabled.
My Control Panel shows National Semiconductor TPM Device at ver. 5.0.47.2006 dated 4/21/2005. I do not get the cssauth.exe error message running this way.
What gives? I'm confused? Why can't I install the ver. 1.18.0.6 of the TPM update without the error?
