Crackling sound through speakers when playing music

I have a telex USB audio converter hooked up to a 4 port USB hub to my T40 (usuing like a dock so i only plug in hub, not all 4 usb cords). When i play mp3's, i hear a small crackling sound through the speakers. I have had this exact same configuration through another laptop with no problems, any clues as to why I am suddenly getting some distortion?

I have a Toshiba laptop that had that problem. I noticed the USB port didn't allow a tight fit from most male ends. I switched cables from the hub to the laptop after finding one that fit better and the static seemed to go away. Accident? Who knows, but it's worth a try.
