Double Display: LCD-Monitor Simultaneously

I know that I can plug an external monitor and have the same display as on LCD display, but...Can I connect a monitor and have two displays in the same way we can have a desktop with two monitors and have multiple windows open? All this is to do CAD and Geophysics interpretation where you've in one monitor a map view and in the other a 2D line display.

Play with the Fn+F7 key combination. That toggles between the different display modes:
- Normal (just notebook panel)
- Copies desktop on both screens
- Extend desktop to other screen
- Output only to external monitor.
