Hydis vs Samsung?

#1 Post by fefland » Sun Sep 04, 2005 12:17 am

What is the preference among 14.1" screens, the HYDIS or Samsung LCD? I think the HYDIS looks better.

How do you know which one you have? Whats the corresponding FRU numbers for the Samsung and the other type?

The installed fru can be determined by parts lookup by serial number, then matched to LCD's available for the T43.

I have the 14.1 inch SXGA+ Hydis, and buddy has the Samsung on his 2373FVU and I we both agree that the Hydis is a bit brighter and has better viewing angle.

I'm happy to report that I just received shipment confirmation for the 2686M5U... looks like I'm getting a Hydis SXGA+ and NMB keyboard!

the 2686DGU with a Chicony keyboard and Samsung SXGA+ should arrive around the same time, so I'll be able to compare the screens this week.

Cool I would be interested to hear your results of the comparison.

I just received the 2686M5U this morning so I thought I would offer some comparisons (I received the 2686DGU yesterday)

- the Hydis display on the M5U is slightly brighter and sharper, but the Samsung panel is still quite good.

- the NMB (Thai) keyboard is infinitely better than the Chicony (China) keyboard

- the fan noise is IDENTICAL, so there goes the theory that the newer August models (M5U) would be quieter.

- fan noise on both machine is tolerable IMHO. I've owned five T43's and only two (2687DDU from Feb '05) were so loud that I couldn't use them in library. the other three have been fine - slightly louder than my T42, but only slightly

- the M5U shipped with a ThinkVantage sticker on the outside of the display but otherwise the two machines look and feel identical (except for keyboards)

- the M5U also shipped with Acrobat 7 (rather than 6 on the DGU) so obviously Lenovo is using an updated image on these August models

I think that's it - overall, I'm extremely happy with the 14.1" T43. no dead pixels, on-time delivery, flawless operation, I highly recommend this machine to anyone.

Parts Requests

#10 Post by safelder » Wed Sep 07, 2005 3:43 pm

If one were to request a particular keyboard and/or display when placing a CTO order, would Lenovo be likely to honor it?

I've tried that route but never had any luck. they've always told me it depends which parts they have in stock at the time they build each system.

That's a shame. I'm sure it's no different than any other laptop manufacturer...it's just that nobody would give it a second thought with any other machine! Oh well...guess I'll have to hope for the best when I order.

Hi Guys,

It is strange that my model has TMD 14.1XGA panel, is it a new company to produce the LCDS? How is that compared with the HYDIAS or SAM?

Personally I do not feel that panel is very good... Ok for jobs but bad for multimedia.

That's not how it works.
IBM/Lenovo like Dell, HP, etc. have multiple vendors for each major component in each laptop.
There are some huge reasons for this:
If a vendor could not produce enough LCD's (for example) Lenovo is not willing to shut down production until enough are produced. They have at least 3 sources for each part.

The exceptions are things like 1.8" hard drives where multiple vendors do not exist.

If you order a system, you will get whatever parts are "grabbed" by the assembler at the time of assembly. Totally "luck of the draw".

You might order 3 identical notbooks and get 3 different LCD's or they could be all the same.

Unfortunately, if you don't get the display you want, return it, and order another, you might get the same one 10 times in a row. No way to tell.

This is how a major computer company is run.

All you are ordering is a particular notebook model number...NOT the components in it.

When the people here are talking about Hydis being better than Samsung, they are referring to SXGA+ 1400X1050 display panels. They are not referring to XGA 1024X768 panels.

I heard that a few people have received Hydis SXGA+ panels on T42's, even though Hydis is not listed as a possible panel for the T42.

(the Hydis is listed on the LCD parts list for the T43.)

Anyone else here get a Hydis on a 14.1" SXGA+ T42 recently ???

I would say the the Hydis is slightly better (a little more contrast), but they are extremely similar. here are some pictures I took:
