Different DVI plugs ?

#1 Post by tomkit66 » Mon Sep 05, 2005 1:05 am

The Samsung 19" TFT comes with an analog plug. I bought the DVI adapter for my standalone, where it fits nicely. Now I thought I will try both the analog output (which works nicely) on my MiniDock and the DVI output.

The DVI output on my MiniDock II looks different compared to my DVI monitor adapter. While on the MiniDock there is only one pin on the far right, the DVI monitor adapter has this pin surrounded with 4 holes.

Thanks
Tom

Those extra four "holes" represent the difference between a DVD-I (which you have) and a DVD-D (without the holes).

DVD-I contains both digital signals (DVI-D) for a digital flat-panel monitor, and also support analog signals (DVI-A) for analog monitors. A simple adapter is all that's needed to convert your DVI-I to a standard 15-pin analog VGA cable.

Hi Ron,

Thanks ... I had no idea !

Another question: I will sell both analog 19" TFT´s and buy one 21" or larger TFT with 1600x1200. Most of them do have analog and DVI plugs. Which one will I have to use with my MiniDock II since it has both? A plain analog cable, or a DVI cable with the converter you mentioned?

Thanks
Tom

I recall seeing other postings indicating you can't get greater than 1280x1024 resolution on the port replicator's DVI port. Does this same limitation apply to the MiniDock II?

The 1280x1024 limitation is gone. Current generation Thinkpads support up to 1920x1200 resolution on an external monitor with IBM's stock driver.

Whenever possible, you should use the DVI to connect your external flat-panel monitor to the mini-dock or Dock II. If your flat-panel monitor only has analog then I wouldn't drive it past 1280x1024 because the quality will suffer. When running on DVIk you should always run at your monitors native (maximum) resolution for the highest quality display. If you run at a lower resolution, the monitor has to scale the image which degrages the quality.

Dell's 2405FPW monitor (1920x1200) looks fantastic when plugged into the Thinkpad Dock II's DVI port. My second choice is the Dell 1905 (or 1901) DVI, and my third favorite is the Dell 2001FP or 2005FP.

I've read on this forum that the new drivers aren't available for a T43p. Does the T43p still have the 1280x1024 limitation?

Thanks again. I misse the opportunity to buy the 24" Dell for just under 1,000 EUR. Since everybody seem to want that Dell delivery time is almost 2 months and price went up to 1,300 EUR....what a shame!
