Problem with DVD-burner UJ-812

#1 Post by borgit » Mon Sep 05, 2005 3:15 pm

Hi guys, i got a t42p with a dvd burner UJ-812 and the thing doesn't want to read DVD-R's and DVD-RW's. It does read CD-R's and CD-RW's and regular pressed CD as well as DVD. Has anyone had any issues with the DVD recording capabilities of this drive? And does anyone know how to resolve this?

Thanks for any input.

is that part no. 73P3294? if so, that drive is unable to write to DVD+R or DVD+RW, but you should have no trouble writing to DVD-R or DVD-RW.

I would suggest buying some name-brand DVD-R or DVD-RW discs and try again. I've had trouble with HP brand discs, but Memorex has worked well in my drive.

I think there are a few things that could be causing it, but I've had nearly the same thing happen before and required a new drive, which IBM sent under warranty. You might want to try a different brand of DVD-R as well, though I'm sure a fully functional drive should be able to read/burn any compliant media.

I did try two different types of media

One was TDK DVD-R and another was an Office DEPOT DVD-RW. Can't read, or write to either of them.

borgit:

have you tried updating the firmware? here are two available firmware updates for the T42p:

I got the firmware from that first link you supplied. The second link is for a different drive. I am thinking of RMAing it, it is probably defective.

Do you have UDF software on your thinkpad? It's part of RecordNow. Uninstall it and your drive will probably work fine.

Bumping this up to see if anyone else has issues with the multi-burner. Mine will read/write cd's fine, and can write dvd's that other machines can read, but for some reason refuses to read its own dvd's.

I thought new firmware might help, but apparently I'm already on v104, which is the newest.

What MadeInJapan wrote might make a difference. The UDF software he is talking about is called DLA (drive letter access). If you have Nero installed, it is called InCD. I believe Roxio's is called Direct CD. These programs allow you to copy files from your hard drive (or elsewhere) to the CD disk, just like you would do to a floppy or another hard disk. The CD has to be formatted first, and these CD's are not readable by all players.

You can uninstall DLA from Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel. DLA can be reinstalled from the C:\IBMTOOLS\APPS\DLA\ directory.

I do have nero installed, but no sign of any of the mentioned software on my system.

INCD is an optional part of Nero, so it's possible that you do not have it installed.
