Good AV Software?
Just like to know what ya'all use for AV software. My Norton (SystemWorks) is coming up for renewal and has not given me any problems. I like the utilities that come with it too. Been using Microsoft Beta Spyware and Adaware.
See a lot of customers with AVG on their PC's. I know they have freeware versions. Have not been a fan of McAfee.
Kind of looking for something a little lighter than Norton, it seems to slow things down quite a bit.

AVG or the Computer Associates eTrust that many ISP's are giving away will suffice if you are a careful user. In other words, they aren't enough protection for my 12 year old that is download-crazy.
AntiVir is another freebie:

In the end just as with most things you get what you pay for.
And it is a Coke/Pepsi type thing too. Which tastes best to you? Which features are most important to you? Do you hate little pop-ups all the time notifying you of what it is doing, for example? Are the amount of resources consumed important? (for you I guess so)
Personally I have a different product on each computer. The next time I buy it will probabally be Panda. Panda's TruPrevent is interesting. Something has to be done about that void between when the virus comes out and when the antivirus updates come out! Free 30-day trials are available.

I'm curious why you say this about AVG (I use it, so if it's weak protection I want to know about it). It seems to be prompting me for updates a couple times a week, so it seems to keep itself current....slagmi wrote:AVG or the Computer Associates eTrust that many ISP's are giving away will suffice if you are a careful user. I have kids too, I have them on a 98 machine simply because it is not quite the target XP is, they download a lot of junk, games and such, and the machine still keeps going (knock on wood).
I might try AVG. I have one of those cheapskate millionaire bosses who had me load it on all the pc's in our admin office and I have not heard anyone complain and that's been about 8 months ago.
Any feedback on the AntiVir?
I think the windows firewall does a pretty good job, and Microsoft Spyware Beta is great.

I've used AVG for a while, but it's a bit of a resource hog, and every once in a while my settings seem to randomly change (once causing all of my outgoing mail to be rejected until I figured out what was going on).

re: AVG, I wouldn't call it weak, but not strong, either. Updates are frequent, and available early in the day (early, US time). Updates for AVG Free are limited to once a day, however, and these days that's not a good thing!
Still, AVG Free is among the best, if not the best, of the freebies.
But don't be suprised when it finds something but says it can't remove it and then leaves it up to you to figure out how.
Grisoft's AVG Professional includes resource management via process priority adjustments, priority updates and automatic healing.
My professional advice?
Don't skimp on the AntiVirus protection. That's not the place to worry about saving a couple of bucks!
