At idle Temp, avg is 70c [on FrankenPad T40/R50 hybrid]

#1 Post by joejoe30 » Tue Sep 06, 2005 11:45 pm

I just upgrade from a 1.5ghz processor to a 2.0 ghz processor on my t4 series laptop. I had a t40 but swapped out the motherboard with an r51 that had the 128mb ATI firegl t2. I know 2.0 ghz is supported but i dont know why my temps are jumping so high. Does the 2.0 ghz system have a much larger fan or something? Anyone know? At idle temps, its avg is around 68c. When i max it out, it pops up to 90c. With the 1.5 ghz, it hovers around 42 - then 70 when at max. I applied some artic silver on it after cleaning off the thermal paste. Anyone have any idea why its so high? Thanks

The T41p has a higher amp fan and also the heatsink is longer and covers the ATI video chip.

But i do have the longer fan

Hey,
thanks again for getting back to me on this issue. The system really does look like a frackenpad now!! Ok, with the fan, I do have the much longer fan that covers the ATi chip. I'll check on the IBM system parts list to find out if they do have another fan that they are using for the 2.0ghz systems. Thanks

something is fishy on your new system, because if the processor is idle it runs at 600Mhz (or 800Mhz) and doing nothing. Should stay around 40°C plus/minus. has nothng to do with 1.5/2 GHz.

You probably have something running in the background...

Its fixed. Apparently the heatsink was not seated firmly on the processor. When i noticed temp jumping in such big increments, I thought i check the seating. And gues what....looking at the theral paste, only one half of the processor was in contact with the heatsink. Thanks again everyone.

That's only true if you have the system set to Adaptive/Dynamic Speed. Quite a few people save that for battery-only operation, since the delay in switching speeds on activity is noticeable and can affect the feeling of responsiveness.
