Quick Launch
Quick Launch
Any one had any trouble with Quick Launch toolbar periodically disappearing from the Start bar at the bottom of the desktop ? Happens to me periodically, about every 2nd or 3rd startup. I then have to go back and re-enable quick launch. Nothing major, just really irratating !
Thanks
Thanks

I had not had that problem, then recently started to have it. I read (here, I think) to delete the file desktop.ini in:
C:\Documents and Settings\youruserid\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch
That certainly has helped. There was also a comment about SoundMax (which I use), but the comment was not conclusive.

Well, it seems to have worked I guess. I deleted the file and then rebooted the computer. When it came back up the quicklaunch was gone. I enabled it and set it up how i wanted, then i rebooted the computer several times. It didn't disappear and is still here as of now. It appears to have fixed it.stkim wrote:will you please let me know if deleting that file helps? i would like to hear back from other before i try that myself and possibly screw something up.

I also have that problem,
it started after I first used windows media player.
I don't even have desktop.ini file in :\Documents and Settings\youruserid\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch .
I stopped soundmax service and changed it to manual so it's not running at all.
I also found a link that said to create some registry value I did created, but still quick launch bar just disappear.

Note 1: This file is there, it is just hidden. Go to Start > Control Panel > Folder Options > make sure box is checked to 'Show hidden files and folders', and make sure box is UNchecked to 'Hide protected operating system files (recommended)'. Now you should see the file desktop.ini in the above folder.keku wrote:I don't even have desktop.ini file in :\Documents and Settings\youruserid\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch .
Note 2: "youruserid" in the path above will of course be different from computer to computer. If you right click on the Start button, choose Explore, you should see several folders directly under and to the right of 'Documents and Settings'. One of these folders will have some more folders directly under and to the right - one of which is 'Application Data'. Look at the name of this folder that is above and just to the left of 'Application Data'. That will be the name you use instead of "youruserid" in the path above.

I too had this problem.....traced it to a program that was occasionally keeping the the registry from closing properly at shutdown (in my case, the wireless driver for the ibm11 a/b/g card).
Solution was to install the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service (UPHClean) from Microsoft which will force the registry to close properly.

If this is indeed the problem, you can find an entry in the Event Viewer application log listing after installing the service which will tell you what is the offending application.

I checked that option in (tools -> Folder Options -> View Tab -> Show Hidden files and folder) but that file is not there. can you place contents of that file here so I can create one.GomJabbar wrote:

Try this (must be logged on as Administrator). Go to Start > Control Panel > Folder Options > make sure box is checked to 'Show hidden files and folders', and make sure box is UNchecked to 'Hide protected operating system files (recommended)'.
Now go to Start > Search, and type desktop.ini in the 'All or part of the file name' box. Click on More Advanced Options, and make sure first 3 boxes are checked, namely: 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders'. Now click on the Search button. You should see many instances of desktop.ini, but look for the one in: C:\Documents and Settings\youruserid\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch .

There is no file called desktop.ini, if you still think it's hidden and I can't see it because of that reason.
check out Application data folder ... it's hidden too. I've changed settings permanently, so it does display all hidden files. (faded Icon). I've installed this User Profile Hive Cleanup Service (UPHClean) from Microsoft.
Let's see how this thing works.

Yes, Application Data folder is hidden, and won't display until box is checked to 'Show hidden files and folders'. Yet even if you check this box, desktop.ini will not appear. One more step is needed.keku wrote:There is no file called desktop.ini, if you still think it's hidden and I can't see it because of that reason.

Was just wondering if UPHClean solved your problem?keku wrote:There is no file called desktop.ini, if you still think it's hidden and I can't see it because of that reason.

It seems to have solved the problem for me. The quicklaunch hasn't disappeared through several reboots for me.johniii wrote:Was just wondering if UPHClean solved your problem?keku wrote:There is no file called desktop.ini, if you still think it's hidden and I can't see it because of that reason.

Re: Quick Launch
On my T30 (XP Pro SP2) the Quick Launch Bar disappeared when I installed IBM Access Connections (the latest). The same happened on my R51.finn wrote:Any one had any trouble with Quick Launch toolbar periodically disappearing from the Start bar at the bottom of the desktop ? I don't really need Access Connections so I uninstalled again on both of the PC's - and the Quick Launch Bar came back.
(I don't have the desktop.ini file described below - hidden files are shown)

True to the nature of my near perferct T23, I have NEVER experienced this problem. I have had some weird issues with the thinkvantage connections software. As far as Windows (Xp Pro, SP2) is concerned, I have had no problems whatosever.
