Hey guys,
I know, I'm a n00b. But regardless, I've tried searching (yes...i really have) and I can't seem to find any instructions on how to install ram for the x40 that I will be purchasing today. I went out and bought some Kingston PC2700 DDR 512mb SODIMM ram yesterday (well didn't really buy....got it for free from best buy!!!) and I'm looking to put it into my new lappie when I get it.
According to the lenovo website, the x40 has the following specs:
System memory
Memory (RAM) std/max[8] 512MB / 1.5GB
RAM slots total 1 SODIMM
RAM slots available 1 SODIMM
Memory speed 333 MHz
RAM type DDR SDRAM
Module specifications PC2700
I don't understand...there are only 1 ram slots total, yet 1 ram slot available? Can anyone shed some light on this? Does this mean in order to upgrade for the current 512mb installed, I would need to drop in a 1 gig stick?
Also, I was earlier contemplating purchasing an x32 due to a lower price by $300 (model # 2884A2U). The faster speed, upgradeable hd, decent lasting 6 cell, and potential for more RAM (i think it has 2 slots?) were all taken into serious consideration. But in the end, the fact that it still weighs .4 lbs heavier than the 8 cell 3.2lb x40, is thicker and bulkier, and I already decent desktop and i'm strictly using the lappie for portability made me go with the x40.
Installing RAM instructions - X40
Two ways RAM is available on a X40: 1) it can soldered directly to the motherboard and 2) it can be a SODIMM.
So, with mine (2371-6EM), it came with 256MB of RAM which was soldered to the motherboard, leaving the slot open. Some come with 512MB (256MB on the motherboard and a 256MB SODIMM already placed int the slot). Some even come with 512MB of RAM right on the motherboard, leaving the slot open.
For mine, again it came with 256 on the mobo, but I dropped another 256 SODIMM in when I bought the computer (in fact, before I even turned it on for the first time), and I am not contemplating taking the 256 out, selling it, and dropping in a 1GB SODIMM. That will take me up to, what, 1.2/1.3GB or so.
The easiest way is to pop open the access panel on your computer and see what's there.
