X41 Screen Brightness

#1 Post by LearningThinking » Thu Sep 08, 2005 2:27 pm

Hi,
I have been using my X41 for a month. I just noticed that the screen is not very bright, at least not as bright as the Dell Ultrasharp coming with the desktop.
What do you guys feel about the brightness of the screen? Or, is this just because my eyes are tired.
Thanks!

Notebook displays are not going to be as bright as desktop displays because of power consumption issues. If the X41's display was as bright as the Dell UltraSharp, your machine's battery life would suffer greatly.

Experimental OLED panels look really bright and don't eat the power that LCDs do, but they have longevity issues currently.
Homebuilt PC: AMD Athlon XP (Barton) @ 1.47 GHz; nForce2 Ultra; 1GB RAM; 80GB HDD @ 7200RPM; ATI Radeon 9600; Integrated everything else!

Let's think of it this way. The x41 screen has a brightness of 150nits according to spec at 1024x768 pixels. Your desktop LCD screen should be at least 250 nits if with decent quality and 1280x1024. On top of the pixel brightness, you also have a lot more pixels on the desktop screen. These all account for why the x41 is not as bright.

1024x768 pixels, each at 150 nits vs. 1280x1024 pixels, each at 250nits.

Heh we're in a similar boat. I've had my X41T this month, and just received my Dell UltraSharp 2405FPW (24" widescreen LCD) with my new system, too.

1900x1200 pivotable goodness :) DVI-D/VGA/Component/S-Video/Composite inputs, PIP, USB ports, 9-in-1 card reader, optional SoundBar, adjustable stand height, etc.

I wish I'd gotten more (during the discount period) to replace the rest of my 21" CRT monitors...
