Internet Explorer problem.

#1 Post by bikereff » Fri Sep 09, 2005 2:32 pm

I've got Internet Explorer 6 with SP1 installed and running Windows ME on an upgraded (PIII) 770Z. The problem is that the browser will not bring up the initial page whenever I got to a website. When I go to a site, either my homepage or a favorite, it will wait until I get the "Server not found" generic page. When I hit refresh, which is the first option, the page will come up. Then I'll go to a link or another website and the same thing will happen.

Does this sound like a virus or malicious adware? Or is it a problem with TCP/IP or Internet Explorer? Or settings? Anybody run into something similar?

Check in IE Tools -> Options -> Connections -> LAN Settings that none of the items are checked. ... JD Hurst

Thanks, JD, but I've checked to make sure that the Lan connection settings are turned off. I forgot to mention that I am using dialup, so that was one of the first things I checked. I'm also running McAfee's Firewall Plus and I've checked the settings on that as well and they have not changed.

Make sure, in the Properties of the dial-up connectoid, under Networking, click on PPP Settings and make sure LCP extensions and MultiLink are unchecked. Software compression is OK checked. Had the browsing issue with my dial-up supplier (that I use only occassionally). ... JD Hurst

Also check proxy settings and make sure the requests aren't being routed to another machine by checking your hosts file.
