Refurbished Laptops, is it OK? T41p Refurbished...

#1 Post by nowstime » Tue Jun 29, 2004 11:49 pm

Hi~

My journey for a laptop is wearing me down...so exhausted from all the search and phone calls...of course the emails...

The models I'm concerning are (wished for a T42p but...can't afford...) T42 3UU, 3VU(kinda too much as well), and FVU(maybe this one...)...

But today...I got a deal from somebody...and he's offering me a T41p refurbished 2373-GEU refurbished 2373-XQX for $2055 including ground shipping to Austin, TX

How are refurbishes? It comes with a IBM 1 year warranty...here's some questions...

1. Is $2055 a good deal?

2. Does refurbished laptops have problems or is it same as new ones?...(you never know what're gonna get...)

3. Can I extend the 1 year warranty to a 3 year from IBM? or should I rather get a new one with the extra warranty cost...(Actually, I might not be able to afford the extra warranty cost...just for future reference)

4. Any advise or what I should check before I get a refurbished laptop?

Answers will be deeply appriciated~~~

4. general refurbished talk applies, ie try to find out why it was sent back (ask the guy).. i wouldn't be surprised if it has a few dead pixels: http://www.gdargaud.net/Hack/DeadPixels.html

I hear the refurbished computers are good. However I heard someone say that many college campuses stores offer good discounts on IBM’s. Mine do. Right now I have been talking to the compute guy from my school through emails since IBM and Toshibas are only available through the school (for Dell, MACS, gateways we get access to the educational websites and codes for phones). But I hear my school is one of many exceptions. For many of the colleges you just walk in and ask to see the computers. I am not quite sure how it works but check it out. I have heard people doing it. Get to a college close by.

Check with IBM direct to see if decent price: http://www-132.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/store ... &langId=-1

You can not usually extend the warranty of a refurbished Thinkpad past 1 year.

I have 2 refurbished T41p's. Both are great. One has a single dead pixel, the other has a perfect screen.

Can I return a 1 dead pixel laptop if I purchase from IBM? and do I get the 30 day guarantee from IBM....?

Anyway to avoid tax from IBM.com?

Only a 7 day money-back guarantee for the refurbs. If your state has sales tax, IBM has to charge it. I think I saw people say Oregon doesn't have sales tax.
