You mean a non-IBM one?

I've been running a non-IBM one in my 600 for the better part of a year now, and have had no issues. Matter of fact, it's a couple hundred MAH more capacity than the IBM one it replaced.

After all, IBM doesn't make the actuall cells themselves, they just buy them from Panasonic or Sanyo or someone.

Unless it's a really cheap one and the name sounds funny (Like an energizer look-alike going by the name "Vigorizer), it'd probably be ok.

I've used several "generic" batteries (my TPs are quite old, so I've had to replace them multiple times over the years), and all have been fine.

I've had mixed results, but I've had the best luck with the 3rd party batteries from Eagle Computer.

Plus they sell on eBay sometimes a little cheaper there.

There's no doubt the genuine IBM batteries are best, but are they twice as good?

Generics

Hey, I came here to post the same question. I'm using a generic beast since, err, one charge cycle. APM readings seem to freeze sometimes (same charge level indicated over a looong time), battery LED blinks orange although the battery is being charged, ...
I hope that this levels out over time. Else I'll be back here and complain loudly (:

And those brand IBM batteries sure are expensive, danggit.

charge on,
