T43p recovery question

#1 Post by coolice » Wed Sep 14, 2005 6:45 am

Hi !

I have a T43p. I would like to test out some issues and for this I need to put back my notebook to the original factory state.

I had obtained the 6cd set IBM Product Recovery CDs (original ones not some home made stuff), and I thought it will be an easy guided thing to do.

BUT I HAVE A BIG PROBLEM :

On all cds there are 2 directories : MFG and RECOVERY, full with .AOD files and 1 big IMD file. Thats all !

None of the disk bootdisk, none of them contain any help file or so...

Could somebody help me, how can I use these recovery cds plese ?

Many thanks in advance,

Moore

While I haven't personally tried the Recovery Disk set yet, the first disk (#1) should be the bootable one. Do you have your BIOS set to allow boot from CD/DVD?

If you haven't removed the service partition, you should be able to press the blue Access IBM button at the beginning of the boot up sequence to get to the service area. From there, you can choose to restore the ThinkPad to the original 'Factory State'. This will accomplish the same thing as using the Recovery Disk set (assuming you are returning the original ThinkPad internal drive to the original 'Factory State').

Hi !

The HDD is completely blank, not even partitioned. I removed everything to have a clean surface for the recovery cds.

Of course the CD could boot, but the cd is NOT bootable. Thats very interesting, but thats a fact. I am sure it is not a mistake, and I am sure that the CD only contains the backup itself but not any util whatsoever to deploy it.

Any other ideas ?

Many many thanks in advance,

Moore

This is usually a simple process, even if you cleaned out your service partition, place CD 1 of 1 in your CD drive, press F12 during start up and select your CD as the boot device, it should start the recovery process. I have deleted my service partition before and used it for extra space. When you recover using the CD's it will replace that service partition so if you need the space you will have to remove it again.

Just keep an eye on what is going on, it is a fairly automated process, set up for the novice user so it should be no problem.

You have boot from the CD, don't open it and explore for files.

I have in front of me the instruction page from my Recover CD set from IBM, I'll try to cover as much without typing this whole page.

"The Recovery CD package consists of these user instructions, one bootable (startable) Rescue and Recovery CD, and depending on your computer model, one or more non-bootable Product Recovery CDs. Product Recovery CD's contain a copy of the software that was preinstalled on you IBM Thinkpad, NEt Vista or Think Centre computer.
You use the Rescue and Recovery CD to start the Recovery Process

NOTE: Only the Rescue and Recovery CD is bootable.

back to me: My Recovery set consists of 7 CDs. The number ONE (1) of (7) is titled "Rescue and Recovery with rapid restore" this is the bootable CD, if you don't have this CD and you have wiped out your service partition you will have to get the Rescue and Recovery CD from IBM or from someone who has a similar model that can burn one for you.

Hi !

Yes I had found this information on the web as well, BUT at my side :

- 6 cds in total.
- Labels are 1 of 1/2/3/4/5/6 :

Product Recovery CD
for
ThinkPad T43, T43p
Type 2668,2669,2678,2679,2686,2687
XP-P SP2

- NONE of the booting !

Can I ask you a question ?

Could you look at your cd contect (e.g. the first one) ? I have 2 dirs : MFG and RECOVERY. Nothing executable, so even if the CD could boot, clear that no application on cd could do recovery. Could you check your Cd content please ?

MANY MANY THANKS,

Moore

[censored]... !

So you and I have a completely different recovery CD set.

Few more questions if you you allow me :

1., Do you have a t43p ?
2., In case you use the recovery cds does they completely restore factory state ? I mean even the hided service partition ?

Many many thanks and sorry for the trouble,

Moore

I have a T42, the highlights are on my signature line.

I can tell you I have 4 HD's that I use interchangabley. I am one of those who reinstalls about every three months because I load and delete a lot of manufacturer softwares for testing and running equipment and I like to have a quick clean running OS.

I have completely wiped out my service partition for more space and when I do the restore from the CD's it does re create the service partition just like when you purchased the machine.

I assume that the recovery process for the T42 is very similar to the T43 just with different files. Maybe someone here could get you a copy of the Rescue and Recovery CD, I am pretty sure if you call IBM and tell them your plight they will send you one out, I've had great luck with them.
I really don't understand why the RNR CD was not included in your set.

Glad to be of some help, anytime.

Yeahh.. I am afraid that will be a hard issue, as many people belive recovery cds ar so called personalised, therefore the information is sensitive...

Is there any chance I could download it from you or if I give you an access to my pc you could upload it ? I know it is lot and big help, but there is a great change it would work, apart from the drivers which i can manually fix. Is that would be possibe ?

Many many thanks in advance,

Moore

I would be glad to, however, since my files are for a t42, I am sure they are different, I could email you these files if you want. If you give me access to your desktop I'll send them over to you. The files are about 260MB.

So, I dont get it.

Just by chance dont you have that 7th boot cd especially for t43 or t43p ?

Thats would be very big help !!

And yes, he is really great person !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Many thanks in advance,

Moore
