Is it a T23 or a T22?

#1 Post by t20user » Wed Sep 14, 2005 9:31 am

I just got a T23 off ebay and it looks like I got duped. He advertised it as a 1.13GHz machine and the BIOS says it is a 900MHz proc. I also downloaded Intels processor ID application that also says it is 900MHz max P3. It also has the problem starting up where one LED lights momentarily and nothing happens, no boot up or anything. This does not always happen, but more often than not. Now from the posts I have read on this type of problem only the T20,21,22 machines were susceptible.

Is there a way to check what type of machine it is? The case says T23, but it looks like the jerk put in a faulty T22 board and sold it as a T23.

I know if you read through the FAQ's on this site there is a link to IBM. This link allows you to plug in the model # and you will get a listing of the components/model type of your machine. Read through the FAQs or surf to IBM. On the thinkpad configuration software there is system information.

Look on the back for the USB ports. If it has two USB ports it is a T23, otherwise it is a T22 or earlier.

Whatever the case says (whatever the serial number in the bottom case says, for that matter) doesn't mean much. People refurbish Thinkpads all the time, and they might have used some T23 parts with a T22 motherboard.

I think Carbon_Unit gave the best suggestion, short of taking the laptop apart and having a peek at the system board and CPU.

I would definitely contact the seller immediately and ask for a refund, since it seems your laptop is not working the way it should anyway.

That is only if the seller warranties the item. Most do not, when buying off of eBay.

Unfortunately. If the laptop plain didn't turn on, he should be able to return it to the seller though, since most offer DOA warranty. Also, if the laptop differs significantly from the eBay description, he could make a case for it and press the seller.

But most likely you are right though. I have never had a major problem in eBay, but if things went bad I guess I would be stressed up.

Last fall there were several sellers on eBay offering one size fits all deals on "T23" mainboards. They were also suggesting that you send them you TP and they would turn your T20, T21 or T22 into a T23.

They disappeared pretty fast.

Look at the memory. T22's have PC-100....T23's have PC-133.

There's a better way. These IBM/Lenovo sites have parts listings with visual breakdowns of the components:

T20, T21 & T22

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... odelmatrix

T23

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... IGR-4YYKVY

Note that the CPU is in a different location on the T23 mainboard. Also there is about a 2" (40mm) hole in the board that the fan sits over to allow better air circulation than with the older models.
