T42 memory in T30. Possible?

#1 Post by robmack » Wed Sep 14, 2005 10:49 am

Hi,

Strange question but would it be possible to use the memory from a T42 Thinkpad (PC2700 @333MHz) in a older T30 model (PC2100 @266MHz)? I will soon upgrade the memory in my T42 and wanted to install the replaced chip in my girlfriend's T30.

I bought a 256MB (Thinkpad 256 PC2700 CL2.5 NP DDR SDRAMM SODIMM
part #31P983) for my T42, when I got my T30 I checked the part # and because they use the same part, it works.

Just check the part# you have to be sure.

You will probably be okay, there are only two possible issues:

*Memory won't downclock: if it doesn't underclock to 266 you're in trouble, but most do

*Mobo won't accept memory: unlikely, but possible

You should be fine

If you mean that possibly the form-factors between the memory chips are different, I checked and they are the same -- 200 pin SO-DIMM. So, they should interchange mechanically; the question is whether they are electrically the same and the underclocking works.

Physically and electircally they are the same: 200-pin SO-DIMM DDR SDRAM. It is a question of the motherboard chipset being flexible enough to run PC2700 RAM at PC2100 speeds.
