T43 vs T42 Fan Noise Evaluation !!!
T43 vs T42 Fan Noise Evaluation !!!
I edited this thread and changed it to T42 vs T43 fan noise comparison. I compared our existing laptops here in the office.
Model # Noise Level (1 - 10 worse)
T42 (14") - Level 2
T42 with FP Reader (14") - Level 5
T43 with FP Reader (14") - Level 5
HP Pavillion (17") - Level 10
So this means that the fan noise level is similar to T42 with FP reader.

Hearing that your T42 w/ FPR is loud scares me -- I'm thinking of purchasing a T42p for the extra vidram and *don't* want the noise I've heard out of T43s. Could the cause be something else (like processor speed)? It's my understanding that the FPR models simply have a different palmrest and I don't see how it would generate extra heat or require different fan control.

in office environment you can't find out the noise level ... Even though I felt my 2687 EJU was loud ... but I couldn't hear fan/wind blowing noise.
but the afternoons at home when I'm working from home, and it's so quite ... (no TV, no A/C fan) i do hear that fan/win blowing noise.
Now I don't know how you measure it, becasue everone has different criteria.
let's do a IBM thinkpad T42 and T43 owners get together and then compare so we can come to same page
... I know it's not practical.
but if someone is form Indianapolis or St. louis or louisville Area I can get togther can compare fan noise. I'm gonna have T43 Q2U now (after two 2687 EJU)

darrenf,
Nothing to worry about. I was working behind my T42p (FPR) and T43 (2668-75U, FPR) side by side for a couple of days.
* In a quiet room, in a standard posture facing the laptop, I can hear the fan from the T43 and just barely hear the T42p.
* When our AC kicks in, I can't hear a thing from T42p, and maybe a slight hint of fan from T43.
If I didn't have the reference to T42p, I probably would have been ok with T43.

Thanks Ojisan!
At risk of taking us far OT, have you done any gaming on the T42p? I have a T42 w/ 9600 but more vidram would be great in some games. 128M would be great but I've heard that the drivers for the T42p are not game-friendly.
In particular, I'm looking to install Omega drivers and OC the chip and RAM (as I currently do with the 9600) will I have any trouble?
Thanks!

CS, CZ are fine with the FireGL. I've played at 1600x1200 only to get dizzy
HL2 and CS Source are more demanding so I need to back off a little on the resolution/texture. It's really good IMHO.
To stay on subject, T42p fan does spin up and start to blow VERY hot air while gaming, but the fan is not annoying. I just think the T43 has higher air flow fan which seems noisier to some.

I found the right person!
Do you use the stock drivers or Omega?
Yeah - heat and fan are fine by me if I'm gaming. I'm always on AC and use a cooling pad under the ThinkPad (USB powered) -- before that I used a small pizza box.
At the OC settings that I use, the laptop will lock up if I unplug it from AC.

Just got my T43p last week, it has been a week since I have played around with this one. I think this is the worst IBM laptop that I have ever bought.
I experienced Error 2010:, heat could be a problem, Also when you are travelling with this baby and try to work in the hotel room, you will find that your surrounding is very quiet and your T43p fan is becoming very loud.
Also, I find that performance difference between my Travelmate 800 and T43p 1.86ghz, performance difference is not much difference. almost negligible. i don't think it was worth the upgrade.

Just to be clear... I meant the *Air Conditioner* in my room.* When our AC kicks in, I can't hear a thing from T42p, and maybe a slight hint of fan from T43.
I use stock drivers from IBM. They work just fine for what I need. You'll enjoy playing games in T4xp with Felxview.Do you use the stock drivers or Omega?

No. None of the 14" displays are FlexView.

Homebuilt PC: AMD Athlon XP (Barton) @ 1.47 GHz; nForce2 Ultra; 1GB RAM; 80GB HDD @ 7200RPM; ATI Radeon 9600; Integrated everything else!
Maybe the T42p is more silent cause it has bigger form factor. We need to compare a T43 14" wFPR to a T42 14" wFPR. (or each w/o FPR)
I could get a T42 14" tomorrow. I dont want any noisy fan. I'll do CHC anyway, so i dont care how often it spins. I care about the pure noise it produces on the lowest level. So, come on ppl, is the T43 fan noisier from the view of a silencer or not?

Ok i read a lot more threads now and i sum up: The T42 is cooler, thus less noise level. But - getting a "silent" Thinkpad is pure luck. It depends on:
- Bus-System/Speed of machine
- Form Factor (14/15)
- Build Date
- Quality of Fan
- FPR ?? (really?)
So, i am getting a T42 w. FingerPrintReader now and i am really curious about how it'll sound like.
I also wonder if its possible to shut down that useless piece of Hardware (FPR) ?

T42 with FPR is not as noisy at T43.gattler wrote:Ok i read a lot more threads now and i sum up: The T42 is cooler, thus less noise level. But - getting a "silent" Thinkpad is pure luck. It depends on:

Go for it. If you can tolerate
I have T42 4WU model and I'm happy with it. Really silent even on quiet room. I can work the whole nite while my babies are sleeping.
T43 FPR 15" (sigged) 1 on batt, 2~3 on ac

Do you have a Finger Print Reader? Is the fan noise acceptable.. ?denthorq wrote:T42 - 2373-4WUgattler wrote:Whats a 4WU model? w/o FPR?
I purchased an extra 1GB ram so I have 1.5GB total.
Works like a charm especially compiling. I'm using it for game development. (mobile phones)

It's 100% quiet
Re: FPR
Cool, thank you for your replies. I, unfortunately have to take the integrated FPR with the T42, i will post my experience in a new thread in about 2 weeks. Who ever invented the FPR, he's a mor**, nobody needs it. If you're Thinkpad is stolen, the thief will get access to the drive anyway, or did i miss some encryption feature here?denthorq wrote:gattler wrote: Do you have a Finger Print Reader? It's 100% quietRead my post above. No FPR. You can buy a USB FPR on stores anyway.
