Fn + F4 to Standby - sometimes screen blanks but no "mo

#1 Post by pianoprodigy » Wed Sep 14, 2005 2:56 pm

This seems to be happening more and more frequently. When I hit Fn + F4 to send the computer to Standby, the screen will turn off but the computer will not go to the "moon" icon on the status lights at the base of the screen. I do not just shut the screen because I like to watch the computer actually standby before closing it.

Any ideas why it is not working?

I've seen this happen when something has an "unsuspendable" connection open.

Specifically if a COM port or Bluetooth Serial connection is open, it will refuse to suspend.

Sometimes I can't figure out why -- it just won't suspend. It would be very nice if Windows would name the guilty driver or process, but it's mute.

Holding down the power button usually sends the right message. :)

If Ground Loop is right, try disabling unnecessary devices using Thinkpad Configuration. I always have my parallel port, modem, IR, etc disabled 'cuz I never use them and don't need them drawing power.
Have used just about every ThinkPad since the T42 days...

I have the exact same problem as pianoprodigy, are you on Win2k? I suspect video driver problems, or interaction with the power management.

Coincidentally (??) if I try to run Presentation Director I get an error message "OEMDSPIF.DLL" cannot be loaded. I have the latest BIOS and chipset updates, and the latest (Aug 2005) video driver.
