G40 quality

#1 Post by juntor » Thu Sep 15, 2005 3:00 pm

Hi,

I just got an old stock G40. I already have a nice dothan based laptop, but I was looking for a backup laptop. The G40 seems to fit the bill: fast cpu (needed for work), cheap, will run linux.

A friend who knows a lot about laptops suggested not to keep the G40, since he knows it has system board issues. I haven't seen any issues on the net regarding this. The only complain I normally see is, its big, heavy and eats batteries. I am ok with those, since the laptop will move from socket to socket. I also have a primary laptop for use.

Are G40 problematic and have known quality issues? Please be as less biased as possible. I am aware this is a thinkpad forum, but I would like to get honest opinions. Thanks.

I used one of my school's G40's and I didn't have any problems with it (or any of the other G40's that I used) and I think that they are as good as any other ThinkPad (except that the G series ThinkPad's are bigger and heavier but that doesn't bother me).
ThinkPads: R51 (1836HAU), T41 (23737FU), 600 (264551U), T60 (2008VRQ), T500 (224255U)

I Love (all) ThinkPads...ThinkPad forever!

If anything, a G-series would be good for beating someone upside the head unconcious with. :)

Yeah, but the P4 will cauterize the wounds, stopping the bleeding. That's why a Model M is my preferred weapon :P

Thanks. I will just talk to IBM next week for my warranty. The warranty just expired while it was on the stock room. Anyone can point me a url or document that says that I can have the full 1 year warranty after getting expired from the local distributor?

I talked to an IBM rep he said I can get the full 1 year warranty, the vendor just needs to forward the invoice to them. Its been a few days and IBM site still says my G40 is still expired.
