Wireless causing NMI Parity Bluescreen?

#1 Post by cromas » Thu Sep 15, 2005 4:27 pm

When I got my new X41, it crashed after a while with a "NMI Parity Error/Parity Check Failed" BSOD. Repeatedly. I tried reimaging with Access IBM, didn't help. So I formatted the HD and installed plain-vanilla XP Tablet PC Edition, without all the IBM gunk. Problem still occured. Ran memtest86+ along with PC Doctor, neither found any problems with my memory stick.

Someone suggested I check the wireless card, and it indeed appears to be the culprit. I turned wireless off, ran ~30 applications at once to fill up my RAM (I was at about 640MB/512MB, so I was well into the swap file), and set up a large download. Everything was fine. Then I switched to wireless and it crashed within three minutes. So the problem indeed appears to be the wireless card.

The guy who told me to check my wireless card said he fixed his by turning Power Save mode to 'Normal' from 'Maximum.' I tried that, still crashed. I then tried turning Power Save completely off, and so far so good, but it's only been a few minutes, so it could still die. And I would very much like to be able to use Power Save mode.

After researching on google, apparently this is a common problem with Atheros chipset-based wireless cards, of which mine is. I searched this forum, and it looks like some other people have experienced this, though possibly without reaching these conclusions. Has anyone ever hit this or found a way to fix it?
